Topic: Random thoughts

ok I problaby asked this beafore but I'll ask again where am I  to get my VIN on my 1971/1972(not sure witch one) Super Beetle decoded prefereably for free and online but if it ain't online it ok. Also dose anybody know of a site or a place where I could find out how many standerd and super beetles produce in 71 and 72, i just wanna see how mine stacks up to to the standerd beetle for each year dependong on what year I find out it is. Also whats the differacne between a regular and these "cal-look" bugs? And say a guy wanted to make a dune buggie from a bug frame would he have to put in a differnt windsheild or just used the oridnal one?

Re: Random thoughts

I wouldn't recommend trying to convert a Super Beetle into a Dune Buggy.  Most, if not all of the Dune Buggy bodies are designed for Standard Beetle Frames.  The MacPherson strut suspension requires an upper mounting point, which the dune buggy chassis just don't have.

Re: Random thoughts

71:  The VIN can be found on the small metal tag mounted to the dash and visible through the windshield on the driver's side. It is also stamped into the metal of the tunnel beneath the rear seat. It can also be found on your vehicle registration or title slip.....plenty of sources of this info for your car.  From the Robert Bentley orange manual: For a 1971 Super the first 3 digits should be 131; for a 1972 Super the first 3 digits should be 132.

For production figures see: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/inf … igures.php
but this lumps all Beetles together....Supers and Standards.
For the definition of Cal-look see the Samba dictionary at: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/dic/c.php

Re: Random thoughts

The Bentley manual VIN information is INCORRECT for 1971 and 1972.  My 1972 Super Beetle starts with 112.  You can't tell if a 1971 or 1972 is a Standard Beetle or a Super Beetle by the VIN Prefix.  You'd have to look at the dealer list  to know for sure.

The only positive way to determine a Super Beetle from a Standard Beetle is by a Standard Beetle's torsion bar/trailing arm suspension versus a Super Beetle's MacPherson Strut Suspention.

If the prefix is 111 it's a 1971.

If the prefix is 112, it's a 1972.

I'm not sure where to find out what the production volume was.  Although I think Hot VWs has published this before.

Re: Random thoughts

Scott: Hmmn... I learn something new everyday. I'm sure that 71 is certain that it's a Super.....But we are in agreement as to the year being defined by the third digit, i.e. "1" is for a 1971, and "2" for 1972, correct?

Thanks for the heads up on the Bentley "glitch".

Re: Random thoughts

71: Solex was an original equipment supplier of carburetors for VW.   Clancy

Re: Random thoughts

Solex also manufactures the dual single barrel Kadron sets, as well as other two barrel carbs that were used on Porsches, and sometimes installed on high perfomance Beetles.  These days people are more likely to use two barrel Webers as the Dellorto and Solex two barrel carbs aren't being made anymore.

Re: Random thoughts

71: Hmmn... a bit less sarcasm would probably be a better approach to gaining information...That said, Der Bugmeister was telling you exactly what the first 3 digits of the VIN tells you.   That is,  112 = type 1 vehicle from the model year of 1972 (that's what the "2" indicates).  Also, look above at Scott's comments of October 25.  The remainder of the number should be the numerical sequence of your particular vehicle in that model year. There is not much more information in the VIN unless you contact the folks at the Museum in Wolfsburg. They can tell you when it was built and when it shipped, and maybe some information on the accessories and original paint on it.

By the way 112264385 is not a complete VIN for 1972 as far as I can tell...I think that it should have one more digit.

Re: Random thoughts

Thanks Clancy,
I'll see if I can track down a adress or something. But before I do that I'll make sure that I have ALL of the numbers in order and correct. By the way is a vw 1300 and a super beetle one in the same? Call me a newbie and crazy but they look the same or Xtremly similar in looks.
