Hiya 71,

The link Patrick provided is a good one (most of the stuff in the Type 2 Library is great!) and definitely one you should bookmark.  However, I gather from your question that you are interested in finding out how your specific vehicle was built.  You can get that information also, although it will take some time and some money.

Here's what you do for production specifics concerning your VW (this is often referred to as a "birth certificate").............

Write a letter outlining your needs.  Be sure to include the car's VIN.  Also be sure to include $15 Euros.  A money order is a good way to go.  All of this goes into an envelope and the following address goes on the outside of the envelope:

Frau Neefe
Stiftung Automuseum
Diesel Strasse 35
D 38346, Wolfsburg
Germany

Give the folks over in Wolfsburg a few weeks and you will receive production information (7 distinct pieces of info including engine number, color, port of entry, date of construction, etc.).

Re: Vin

Thanks Mike. I got lucky finding it. Google is great when searching for Volkswagen websites.

PS.  Great websites like this one has a tendance to disappear. I would suggest that you make a copy for yourself (in case this happens).

Re: Vin

Mike, did you get a birth certificate for your Volkswagen? Just wondering.

Re: Vin

Just as a further note until the late 90's -2000's mexican beetles you cannot decode a Beetles vin. Other than showing the year & model from 1965 on it is just a sequential number.

Not only that, companies like Mid America Motorworks don't even consider them Beetles. Check out this link to see what I mean:

Re: Vin

Hiya Patrick,

I did get the production information which is included in a VW birth certificate, but I'm reasonably sure that the letter I received was not a VW birth certificate.

You see, I asked for this information a while ago.  The letter which VW sent me is dated August 17, 1999.  As a matter of fact, the information was free at that time.  Since then VW has decided to charge for that information (and I'm told) reformat the letter containing that information.  So, I do not have any direct experience with sending money in for a birth certificate.  Just passing the information along as a public service.

Re: Vin

Hey Mike.  I was just wondering what they looked like and if it was worth the money asked. Thanks.

Re: Vin

Here's a website...

www.barndoor.dk/BDbirthcertificate.html

...where someone has posted a copy of their VW "Birth Certificate" that they purchased.

It's for a Bus/Van...but I am 99% sure that the format of the certificate would basically be the same for a Beetle/Ghia/Type 3/etc.

Personally, my opinion is that it does not contain any sort of vital info that you can't gleen from your vehicles VIN.

In fact I might even go as far to say that at $15 euros it is a bit of a rip-off.

I would rather spend the $15 euros on some new points, condensor, distributer cap, and rotor...or another VW repair book to add to the library.

But...for the VW owner that has everything...

You are right. It looks kind of lame. But like you said for the Volkswagen fanatic, you have to have it.

Thanks for the picture.
