Re: Rust Converter

I've had great success with the POR 15 rust removal kit (http://www.por15store.com/). It does run some $$$, but works great if the instructions are closely followed.
Re. bleaching your interior, what exactly are you cleaning? Door panels, fabrics, etc. would be damaged by bleach, a mild soap designed for fabric cleaning would be a much better choice. If everything is stripped out and you're working with metal, the POR 15 kit has an excellent cleaner for the job. Good luck! - David

Re: Rust Converter

Best rust remover is a body-working grinding-wheel. Just be careful around my Ghia, if you removed all the rust, I wouldn't have a Ghia at all.

Re: Rust Converter

Converter - I've used Permatex brand with success.  It converts light rust (use wire brush first to remove loose stuff) to a black something that can be primed and painted over.

Removing - As kcd suggests, a good grinder gets most rust, at the cost of removing metal.  A very good alternative is media blasting if you are near a location that can do it.  Both of these methods create a great deal of heat which can warp a large, thin, flat surface if not done correctly.

Re: Rust Converter

As far as rust removal & surface prep...I feel sandblasting of some sort is the best.  But it is very messy to do at home on an intact car.

The sand gets into everywhere especially if you are doing the sandblasting on the inside of the car ...including places you don't want sand...and it's these places that you will have a very tough if not impossible time removing the sand.  Sandblasting is great for doing the outside of the car & for doing individual parts.  If doing the outside of the car, be sure to close the windows & cover up anything mechanical (engine, wheels, steering components) so that sand doesn't get into the mechanics & prematurally wear things out.

If sandblasting is not an option, I like to use various types of wire wheels (fine wire & heavy wire).  The plus to this over an angle grinder is less heat & metal removal.  Believe it or not, I removed all of the undercoating from my Beetle with a drill and a wire wheel.

As far as anti-rust products...I have been using a product called Masterseries, www.masterseriesct.com/.  It is about half the price of Por-15 (around $25/quart), and it is a one step process to apply (after removing any loose rust)...then paint.  Por-15 is good stuff...but from what I have seen at their website, it can be a multi-step confusing process.  I have been using the Masterseries "Silver".  It contains metal particles to help fill-in small voids.

This stuff is used on a lot of public works projects such as when bridges are being sandblasted & repainted.  The Masterseries is applied after sandblasting...and has substantial resistance to water penetration, salt spray, and supposibily is very resistant to chemicals such as acetone, paint thinner, gasoline, etc.

There was supposed to even be one test where a item was coated with Masterseries & was immersed in acetone or paint thinner for a number of hours with no ill-effects.

Not too many people sell this stuff...I have only found 2.  The place I get it www.masterseriesct.com/ has fast shipping & the items are REALLY packaged well.  The guy that sells it is for the most part is helpful & timely.

Good luck fixing the rust!

Rust Bullet is great stuff. Here's there link:  http://rustbullet.com/Products/Automoti … motive.htm

First I would remove the big flakes of rust. Once you paint this stuff on it's not coming off. It sticks to the metal and is a strong as concrete. The only problem with this product is that it is a little expensive (which you said that you don't want) and the only color that it come in is silver. If you are using it in the interior the color won't matter.

Re: Rust Converter

Sand blasting should be used with extreme care.  Most media blasters will warp your body panels as they either use the wrong material or do not have the expertise.
