Topic: Oil Bath Air Cleaner.

I have a question for the forum. Is it better to put the Oil Bath Air Cleaner back on my 1500cc engine. Right now I have a Scat (paper) filter set-up. I am always looking to improve the performance of my stock engine. Thanks.

Hiya luvs,

Put the oil bath air filter back on the car.  Properly maintained (cleaned and oil kept to the proper level) it does a great job of catching particulate matter before it gets into the carburetor.  Paper filters, if they are not maintained properly (read: changed out) can actually make matters worse when the material begins to fray from dirt and corrosion.

Re: Oil Bath Air Cleaner.

I put the Oil Bath Air Cleaner back on. The engine looks much better. I just have one question. When you put oil into the bottom part of the air cleaner, should the oil be under the metal lip or below it? I do see the arrow that represents the fill line but I always wondered if the meant that I fill it up to the arrow (which is above the lip) or just below the lip. I don't want to put in too much oil or too little oil. Just the right amount. Thanks

Hiya Luvs,

It's been my experience that you're fine either way.  However, I do believe that the arrow represents the actual fill mark and the oil surface should be level with it.

Re: Oil Bath Air Cleaner.

The oil bath air cleaner also has a built in velocity stack to catch and pre atomize fuel.

Thanks Darby, I wish that I had all this information before I wasted my money on two different Scat filters. Plus I bought a replacement filter when the old one got dirty. What a total waste of money. Oh well, live and learn.
