Topic: 12 to 6 conversion!

I'm finally getting back on my 62 restoration, and now that the engine pieces are coming together for a very "stock" 1200, I've decided to either convert it back to 6V, or use a "6V"-sized 12V generator. Because the car had been convered to 12V before I got it, I don't have the "fan cover" for the shroud that fits the 90mm 6V generator body, or the backing flange for it. The only ones I've found are specified for 25 & 36 hp engines. Does anyone know if this was also used on the 40 hp 1200, or was it a different part?

Also, does anyone happen to have any of the "stale air" shroud air-control parts? This version used a restrictor-ring on the shroud inlet instead of the later flaps in the bottom of the shroud.

Re: 12 to 6 conversion!

Tom, For what it is worth I just turn a 12V regulator sideways & mount it on top of the gen using the ground screw. Has fooled everyone until I point it out, they see the regulator up there and look no further.
For 36hps cars I think Kymco may be the last folks to do the conversion. There was an O-L-D guy at a local Auto Electronics place that used to do the conversions for me but he passed a few years back.
How's Amy ?

Re: 12 to 6 conversion!

Thanks Darby, I'll check with Kymco. I did find a 12V generator with 6V-size case at BFY, but I still need to figure the right backing plate & pulleys to get the belt to line up, etc.
Amy is doing well. They are giving her longer breaks between chemo now, so I think we are going to drive to Michigan to visit my family there. She should be all through with chemo by Thanksgiving.

Re: 12 to 6 conversion!

Hey, Tom: I will check my "stock pile" but I'm almost positive I still have the air control ring from an old 36 hp engine....no thermostat or linkage, just the ring, the return torsion spring, and the horizontal shaft the ring and spring ride upon. And I also may have the 40 horse fan parts... do you need both items 16 and 17 in Vic's drawing? See:

Stay tuned and I will email you with what I find.  Good to hear the report on the daughter. We'll keep her in our prayers. Clancy

Re: 12 to 6 conversion!

Thanks Clancy, I appreciate your checking. I have thermostats and can duplicate much of the linkage, but the ring, spring, and shaft are more of a challenge.
I think the 40 hp fan mounting is 2-piece instead of 3: part 17 and a single plate that functions as both 16 & 18 (17 fits inside behind the fan).
I'll buy any of these parts you have.

Tom
