Topic: New Turnkey Engine suppliers

Hi,
I need to get a turnkey engine for my 78 Vert - Not much left after engine fire....

Any experience with:
Quality German Auto Parts
Strictly VW
Strictly Foreign

I'm looking to go with a 1776 or 1915 and freeway flyer Trans.

CAn someone tell me what type of power improvement there is with a 1776 over stock 1600 DP?

All recommendations welcome.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike: A 1776 will give you a significant (i.e. noticeable) increase in "uumph" over a stock 1600, assuming you setup the 1776 correctly. I'm guessing that most folks opt for a dual carb set up with the 1776, and probably electronic ignition (pertronix) with a mechanical distributor (009). The larger engines (including the 1835 and 1915) can be reliable as well but usually need a bit more regular attention than for the 1600.  Read John's writeup on performance engine decisions. http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resou … 1hpeng.htm
This is good reading even if you don't plan on doing the work yourself.

As for the "freeway flyer" tranny...good and bad.....On the plus side, the tranny is geared such that the engine is not having to work as hard at higher cruising speeds...On the bad side, that same gearing is such that at lower, around town speeds, I've heard that proper engine cooling is an issue due to lower related engine speeds. Give the folks at Long Enterprises a call or see their web site at http://www.longenterprises.com/
Also check with BugTrans (Stuff) at http://www.bugtrans.com/

As to the vendors you mentioned, I have no direct or indirect experience with any of these. All things said, you might want to also investigate a brand new Mexican engine with zero miles on it. These are still available (for a while anyway) and most reports I've heard give high praise to these "stock" engines which are also available with hydraulic lifters as an option. Good luck and let us know what you decide on this. Clancy

Re: New Turnkey Engine suppliers

First off Death Valley Ca. just 100 miles down the road from here. I use ta live across river from Needles Calif. << 118 degrees in the shade. 92mm barrel,s << 1835 jhgfchrfvbg>> Suck ! They heat up cause the wall,s are too thin ? Then warp , Distort , << Causes excessive blow by wich in turn heat,s the motor oil even more , Then inturn they cause excessive head temp,s leads too droppin valves . >> same thing on the 1641 cc  or 87mm barrells only not as extreme . 90.5 is what ya want 1776 motor or a 90.5bore with stroker crank . Bore times stroke = CC,s or displacement . Now far as power  improvement goes with 1776 motor it,s considerable with a basically stock motor , or head,s. If ya want more be prepared too spend some money ? As i got close ta 3500.00 in my 1776 << Gas in Gas out ! Is the Key i have close too 900.00 alone just in the 043 head,s , rockers and solid shaft << Not too mention the Tri Mill ceramic coated exhaust , as i runn a Baja etc. lott,s of time in detail will give you a considerable more horse power on a long hot hard drive ? Over the bigger bore motor,s ! As im sure most of you guy,s have experienced the buggy motor that runn,s like stripped arsed ape when first started but after a hard hot cruise the engine tend,s too loose that peppyness << Mean,s it,s runnin hotter than it should ? I reccomend an engle 110 cam << This camm how ever does require solid rocker shaft,s , with new rocker,s , and dual carb,s are a must for a reasonable idle ? Now too have a rebuilder , rebuild such a motor for you isnt probably gonna happen as the time spent on a motor become,s cost prohibitive for the rebuilder ? So too have some one rebuild a 1776 motor for you is too make the builder a list of every thing you want in it or done too it << This will definately increase the price considerably ? As i laugh my ass off at advertised prices for motor,s i see in Hott VW,s and Trend,s Read small print Exchange <<< 50 percent of the core,s are not exchangeable <, This add,s considerable too the price ? As i know what it cost me ta rebuild a motor here just in machine work , and parts ? You can easily spend 100 buck,s just on barrell stud,s <<,6mm chromoly etc . if your interested in a list of basic requirement,s too successfully runn a 1776 motor ? Post again as there are many lil trick,s that both improve performance and reliabilty>>. Full Flow, 8 dowell crank , lightend fly wheel, Standard case, oil sump, Gene Berg oil pump, list goes on , and on ? Saying is when asked how much this all will cost is >> How fast ya wanna go, and how many day,s out of the week do you wanna do it ! Sean
