Topic: My new baby

Hi all,

I just scored a '78 vert that has suffered from carelessness.  It's had an engine fire that destroyed the upper engine, back of the rear seat and vert top.  Paint on the rear decklid and rear fenders is also burned off.

Solid floors and reinforcing rails, 88,000 original miles, Original upholstery in great shape (except for the burnt rear),  Vert frame is still good and latches securely to windshield frame.Car seems to have been very well kept until fire. - last on road in 200 or 2001.

I paid $200.00 for it. - I know what's involved with the engine / mechanicals from my 74 sedan resto.  What's the deal with redoing the vert top?

Did I get screwed or am I ok with this? - Car located in New Jersey.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: My new baby

I restored a 78 convert three years ago and farmed out the top.  Top cover, headliner, padding, rear window weatherstrip, 3 cables and labor was $1800.00 and thet was the average. Not cheap but it is a mother of a job done yourself. I use a company locally for such things. I thought that "Chuck's Convertible parts" would fully restore your top by mail, laeving you to just bolt it on and sling the rear cable. Don't know about $$ though plus shipping of course

Re: My new baby

A friend of mine used Chuck's to restore the top of a car for his son. It also needed some frame pieces replaced. They did a nice job, but I don't know the price.
