Topic: So I've got this block...

Simply put I was weeding out my parts garden last week and I knew I had an engine block that has been torn down and split and cleaned but I also ran across about 8 heads (there are at least 5 DP) and 3 DP manifolds and even a set of GOOD late model heat exchangers.  I have been meaning to get rid of a lot of this stuff but after looking at what all I have I am beginning to think that in so much as I have all these "free" parts, I should attempt to build a motor.  I'm fairly handy with a wrench but have never done this before so it will be a learning experience for me.  I have a few questions that I know many on this site can answer.  I know there are some differences in engine cases.  How do I figure out what I have and if it's worth using.  Let me point out that I don't want to build a performance engine. I just want something solid with maybe a little "umph" to keep up with the left lane but it doesn't have to be a tire burner.  Cost is somewhat of an issue only becasue I don't want to put out a lot of money on my first engine cause I don't know if I trust myself to get it right.  Can someone point me in the right direction to purchase a crank and pistons and such.  ARe there rebuild kits that you can buy that include all you need for whatever motor you want?  Who can I trust?  I really appreciate all the help I can get and will probably ask more questions before purchasing parts as I want to do this as right as I can.  Thanks in advance!!!
Will

Re: So I've got this block...

get the "Bug Me Video" on a type 1 engine rebuild and get a good shop manual for the 1600cc  you can put 87mm into the 1600 DP and get a little more umph.

Will: In addition, get yourself a copy of Tom Wilson's book, "How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Aircooled Engine". It gives lot of details including what to look for during your inspection of various componenets. It's available from most big book sellers (Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble) as well as many of the VW vendors listed in Hot VWs and VW Trends. In my opinion, with this book and the Bug Me Video, you can't go wrong. Good luck. Clancy
