Topic: engine tin

I have a 65 bug with 40 horse engine.  When I got the engine (very used) it had all the tin on it but the thermostat and air control inside the housing were missing.  Being in south Louisiana i figured I didn't ned it since i wanted max cooling.  Now i have an overheated engine that may be burnt.  Was it the lack of a thermostat or because the engine had just too many miles when i got it.

Re: engine tin

I'd say it was definitely because the thermostat was missing, the linkage would have flopped around and the air flaps would not have opened.

You can run with a broken stat as long as you adjust it to hold the linkage in the high position to hold the flaps open all the time.  This means it takes longer to warm up but is fine when it's hot.  If the stat was missing, this adjustment couldn't have been done.

Re: engine tin

HHmmmm Thermostat on a air cool motor ? Kinda sound,s like thermostat in a water cool motor ?? Lett,s see if thermostat gett,s stuck closed on water cool mean,s water cant circulate thru radiator and cool itself ? << Same thing on a buggy Flapp,s wont open so the fan can circulate air over the top of the motor ? Ifn nothin else peice of angle iron with hole drilled thru it screwed into the fan shroud too hold the flap arm open would have done the trick . << This is proper way too do away with the thermostat . As removing flapp,s on a old style cooler type motor,s is not reccomended as there needed too direct air flow over the head,s . Burnt motor ? As in How badly ? Knockin , tickin tappin etc. Sean
