Topic: 1960 vw lower front end

I have a question about lowering the front end of

my vw.  can you lower it without buying a lowering kit. the front end is really high. maybe you could e mail me instructions on how to lower the front end. i heard you can loosen something and lower it yourself.

Re: 1960 vw lower front end

Chachi: Only a few ways to lower the front end: a lowered beam, an adjustable beam (needs parts welded in or purchasing an adjustable beam, outright) or lowered spindles. Other than these three ways, I guess you could remove torsion bars in one or both of the torsion tubes, but that just really affects your spring rate, and really isn't a safe suggestion. You probably are confusing the lowering process with that of the rear torsion adjustment which actually does "simply" loosen the spring plate/torsion bar connections on the rear suspension and adjust the rear height that way. This is quite a precise task and wouldn't do much to lower the front of your car. Maybe someone else has some other ideas, but I don't think that there is a simple "loosen something and lower it yourself" procedure. Anyone else?  (of course you could run smaller diameter tires up front, but I don't think that's what you're after...) Clancy

Dropped spindles and would like too point out might check with the difference on ball joint front end,s verses the king pinn << Wich king pinn is what you should have i do not like or reccomend tampering with king pinn,s due too fact that they are gettin harder too come by and are highly sought after by us baja freak,s ? Simply putt ? Drop it like they did the old Porsches with the dropped spindles do not cut or remove spring,s from a perfectly good king pinn front end ? Less you from East L.A. and carry a Lorcin 380 kurz automatic pistol that jamm,s every 3rd round then do what ever you want with cuttin Torch, and the fuzzy big dice hangin from the rear veiw mirror 4 inch 2 by 4 block,s not included ? LMAO Adapter plates from link pinn too ball joint front end,s are readily availiable and your link pinn is worth money in some buggy circles provided it has not been tamper with ? Dropped spindles ? Disc brakes is way too go here << Proffessionally done ? Sean

Re: 1960 vw lower front end

If your VW is  type 3, then you can lower the front end by adjusting the torsion bars in the same fashion as you can do for the rears of all models. T3 is the only one I know of that you can do this with.

If you just want a small change, then you can use 14" wheels. This still gives enough clearence with disk brakes, from my experience, but you should check before buying. Gives better handling, better brakes, more fender clearance and retains full suspension movement and ride characteristics.    Brian
