Topic: How many shims under the flywheel?

I am assembling a 2165cc motor using an assortment of parts from various sources, including a 78mm crank of unknown origin and a chrome moly flywheel from CB. As  trial assembly I placed the main bearing on the flywheel end of the crank, and bolted up the flywheel. The resulting clearance only has enough room for two shims (.24 + .36) plus about 5 thou endfloat. I had expected to be able to install the usual three shims. I am wondering if anyone has any relevent experience and could comment. I wonder if it is common to find the "three shims" standard not achievable with after-market parts. - Brian

Re: How many shims under the flywheel?

Are you using the Alum. gasket between the crank and flywheel. You should on all "O" ring flywheels. Use three shims so they work agenst the center shim.  http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/crank_end.play.htm

Re: How many shims under the flywheel?

Thanks Vic. That explains it. I've only done a trial assmbly, and I didn't put the Al gasket in. I will now. Cheers,  Brian
