Topic: Oil Light

a few things baffling me.  Just picked up a new short block and then finished the rest myself.   I installed the engine and it runs but:

1.  Oil light stays on???  no oil leaks yet.  I went with a filter pump so no screen,  should I put the screen in.  Will it make the oil light go out, I would think not.  The oil pressure sender is tight and I checked the connection. How do you trouble shoot that.

2.  Clutch issue. Everything went together fine  I had to play with the clutch adj. screw since new case has a threaded collar in it and i  needed to get the bolt in it.  Anyway it seems I have no clutch??  I depress it and nothing it is very light should I try to adjust it all the way to end of cable(toward driver?)  any how the engine sound good.

thanks

Re: Oil Light

Yes you should always run the screen as the motor was designed to use it. It helps keep oil at the pick up tube.
Try screwing a gage in the oil sender Hole.

Re: Oil Light

Yeah switch is probably badd i use a gauge <, Actually a made in Taiwann oil Gauge <, Cheap i set it up too screw right intoo the case . It works ? But now on the clutch problem here ? Im not sure what all is in Vic,s site on this but might check him out see ifn he got any tech on it ? But First lett me explain deal on 6 volt too 12 volt conversion . <, Cause im thinkin this is probably the deal here . But between throw out bearing,s and the throw out bearing shaft , and pressure plates too clutch combos? Theres like i think 9 different combos that work / I actually have like 10 old pressure plates and bunch of transaxle throw out bearing,s and shafts that i keep around just ta look at when i try ta figure out a combo ? If im lookin at it i can remember what work,s with what or least figure it out ? Hot Vw,s at one time published article on all different combo,s with pic,s i kept magg for many year,s but i either stashed cant remember where i put it or some one walked off with it . But other than wrong combo only other thing that will cause clutch not too work is bodin tube not being anchored in the tunnel right . Check Vic,s site and ifn he dont have nothin on combos post again i will try ta help ya figure it out . Sean

Re: Oil Light

the 6v fly wheel is the same as is the pressure plate the only new thing was the ridgid friction disc???  I wounder about the clearence it seems like maybe it is to close or to far away ??

thanks,

ps  how much is one of those dial pessure gauges??

Re: Oil Light

Again..... I put it all back together and reTorqued the clutch bolts.... I think that might have been the problem.  I dont think I did a good job the first time tightening the bolts and that would make sence since I could get the trans into first and the wheel would move but only if the engine was reved....

Anyway the engine I will put back in tomarrow and we will see what is what.... I will also be able to buy the pressure dial indicator \

Hope all had a happy and safe Memorial Day.

Re: Oil Light

the mexi-vw pump with the spin on oil filter was put on incorrectly by the shop that built my short block.  the filter should point toward the driver side!! Made the switch and presto...oil pressure.

I think my clutch problem is due to the Bowden Tube(SP?) not having the correct amount of bend.... I will get back to you on that one....

thanks for the replies

Re: Oil Light

not to scare you but if you'd been running the engine with the pump like that you were pumping NO OIL and may have done some serious bearing damage.  Aside from pulling the motor all apart about the only thing you can do now is check for a bunch of bearing material in the oil and check oil pressure / listen for knocks. Hopefully the engine was assembled with a great deal of assembly lube.

Re: Oil Light

YEAH ? Ya all scarin me now ? LMAO What the hell bugg,s are tough ? LMAO sure hope they used lott,s of assembly lube ? LMAO i have ta stop now afore i gett offensive in my de meanor ? LMAO Sean

Re: Oil Light

Ok Sean now you are scaring me !?

Re: Oil Light

it was turned over and over waiting for oil pressure.  then I did start it and ran it for no more than 30 seconds  3 times to check pressure at a dial gauge.

I sure hope there was no bearing damage or the machiene shop is building me a new one.... they put the pump on back wards

Re: Oil Light

Most likely you should be fine if they use any assembly lube. A buddy once built a new engine that was drilled for full flow. He didn't use the correct oil pump with the oil line and used a stock one. Capped the return hole and got about 40 highway miles on the car while playing with his non functioning oil pressure gauge before the engine locked up.  He'd neglected to remove the brass plug tapped into the internal oil pressure hole that was installed to use the full flow pump.

Re: Oil Light

the guy said he uses a heavy dudy lube during assembly and had the same story about a friend getting 50+ miles in a Mercedes that had a bearing put in backwards before the engine siezed.   Ofcouse knowing all of this now I do not know if I will ever use him again, he said it was his friend who put the bearing in backward but???  In 2 years or so I will get all the parts together and build one from the ground up myself... Usually I just build up from a short block...

thanks again

Just need to adjust that clutch tube and should be on the road next week
