Topic: Obscure question

Hey, I have a friend who's selling his 1970 Bus, and it seems to have some features I haven't seen before.  It was originally sold in Alaska, and seems to have a cold weather package attached to it.  Does somebody out there have any info on special features on Alaska Buses from that time?

Re: Obscure question

Hiya 6v,

So besides a gas heater what does this 70 Bus have that constitutes a cold weather package?

I could be dead wrong but I do not believe that any Bus sold in Alaska during 1970 (or thereabouts) had any equipment unique to that particular market.  There is no listing for a factory option cold weather package for any market.

Re: Obscure question

From my friend's ad on The Samba:

"One point of interest regarding this bus: it is one of only a few buses designed specifically for sale in Alaska. Therefore, to cope with the extreme temperatures of the environment for which it was designed, it has several heating pipes running its length from the front of the cab, including an unusual pair of hollow pipes placed directly inside the doors. To the best of my knowledge, these aren't after-market additions, and were part of the bus's design when it was made. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of VW history can speak to this. In any case, the vehicle might have collectors' value as well."

From looks alone it would appear that your friend may be shortchanging himself.  I would say the bus is worth about double what he's asking.

Re: Obscure question

There was no factory "Cold Weather" special model.  Vehicles for cold climates simply got a larger A/H battery. The hollow pipes inside the doors are standard equipment on all passenger models ( non campers / non panel )
They simply transfer fresh air from the rear of the dash to the hents located just behind the front seats so back seat passengers got some fresh air too. The heat duct up the middle under the bus connected to the big round pipe running up under the nose. There was a valve there to transfer heat to the floor or windshield.

Re: Obscure question

i am from canada and my 1970 camper was origionally sold here with a "cold weather package" nothing major other than a gas heater and an external oil heater that bolts on to the bottom six bolts on the oil screen. as for ductwork i think they were standard two under the back pull out   bed/bench ,one in the centre in the floor between the two front seats and regular defrost and floor settings. nothing in the door though. i also have a propane furnace but i think it is an after market as not the origional,it had long since been replaced for some reason.

If there were vents in the door of this other bus than im wondering if this was a transporter then later changed to a camper to fit the owners needs.

I hope this answers your questios.
good luck

Re: Obscure question

Hiya 6v,

The records are clear that there was no such thing as a "Cold Weather Package" from the factory.

However, that would not stop an enterprising dealer from outfitting his inventory to match the climate in his region.  It's likely that any equipment you find on the Bus other than a gas heater was either installed locally by the dealer to maximize his profit, or was a very good installation of aftermarket products by a PO.

Re: Obscure question

I do know that from close inspection of the oil heater/block heater that it was made in canada, because we have very long cold winters that it makes sense that dealers would have extra accesories included otherwise such as a " cold weather package" as it is colder yet in alaska. you have to understand that all vehicles sold in canada come with a blockheater so im thinking it would definately be the same in alaska. also a cold weather package doesnt mean a huge difference,it could be just one thing. but who knows i dont work in the volks marketing dept.
