Topic: should I switch to an alternator?

Hi all,

I am thinking about switching to an alternator in my '70 bug, and was wondering if anyone could tell me some things to consider about making this switch. What are the pros/cons? Any wisdom, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: should I switch to an alternator?

Alternators are the way to go
but you will need the alternator + mount and pulley - maybe a different belt
not sure about the fan

your carb accel pump rod might interfere-- a little creative grinding or reposition of the linkage

the regulator under the seat will need to be pulled out and the wires hooked together- (large reds soldered and insulated)-
while at thr regulator - lenghten the small blue wire to the alternator- from idiot light (key)#61
Make up a new 6 or 8 awg wire to the battery + terminal on the starter from the output on the alternator

we just replaced the generator on the 1600sp in our '57 bug with a 55amp alternator
also the voltmeter we are using is a lot easier than a ampmeter to hook up

have fun

Re: should I switch to an alternator?

Might i Reccomend a Bosch Hi Out put altenator and rather than grinding as Hank says Clancy pointed out that the 34 pict series carb came with 2 different types of accelerator pump,s and you will also need too replace the fuel pump and fuel pump actuator rod too the shorter Altenator version . Be extremely careful pullin the rod out as if you pull the fuel pump pedestal up with out removing the actuator rod this will cause actuator rod too fall down inside the motor . << Very Badd thing So pay attention ta what you are doing and alway,s pull actuator rod out first .   Sean

Thanks for all the great advice, guys. Especially you, Sean... I would have never thought to watch for that actuator rod falling into the motor.]
