Topic: Help with seat installation!

Hi Everyone!

Well, the pan replacement on my '72 convertible is almost complete.  New pans . . . new carpet . . . the pedal cluster is back in place . . . but now, for some reason, I can't get my front seats back on the tracks!

Is there a trick to this?  I made sure to buy the correct pans for the '72 so that the '72 seats would fit.  I can't guarantee that the seat rails are exactly the same as the ones on my old pans because I threw the old ones away, but they certainly look the same according to my memory.  HELP!

Re: Help with seat installation!

hey first off did you do pann installation cause that,s gotta be measured , placement dont have too be exact but if pann was bought with seat rail,s allready welded in there spot welded ? Can be removed or adjusted , grind spot welds or drill grind combo . Also theres suppose too be plastic runners that fitt over top of the rail,s<<< These are an absolute neccessity if ya want the seat,s too slide and adjust properly ? And i use the seat with the runners installed too adjust seat rail,s wich i tack in here and there then try seat back and forth ? Using a tape measure weld rail side in place near tunnel first , then slide seat on rail,s etc. posistion seat tack weld in front , remove seat etc too weld other rail tack in place try seat then weld hell out of her but be carefull .. Pann,s are thin subject too distortion so tack weld cool off tack etc

Re: Help with seat installation!

The tracks came pre-welded on the pans . . . it's not an issue of them lining up.  The seats will go on about 3 inches, but then they stop.

Re: Help with seat installation!

I have a seat on my '66 that is not in good condition.  I had the same problem until I looked under there and saw that the mechanism for the seat adjuster, which I thought was completely absent, still had the little spring-loaded flange that prevents the seat from sliding.  I moved that out of the way with a screwdriver, and the seat slid right on to the tracks.  Maybe something similar is going on with yours.  I'm not real familiar with  later seats, but thought I'd stick my nose in anyway.

Well, they still won't go in . . . any other suggestions?  Thanks for the help!!!

Re: Help with seat installation!

My first thought is to look under there with a flashlight and SEE why they won't go in and then fix it.  Yancey

Re: Help with seat installation!

I can't see your seats/rails, but I can tell you my story.

I always have had trouble getting my seats back in.  seems like they are very tight on the tracks and I can get one side on, but not the other, or vise versa.  So i took a file and took off the front corners of the tracks, so that they both have a nice gradual taper to them.  Makes sliding the seat back on the rails much easier.

Re: Help with seat installation!

3 inches is where the seat slider meets the clipp on the seat rail . Check the clipp it,s lil springy metal tab << Might be bent or held up but it must be pushed down >. Usually pushes down when seat is slid back on rail,s but if bent or somethin might be holdin ya up . The deal on seat removal is too push these tabbs down too get seat off the seat rail Too Install you just slide seat back hard against these tabbs and they should push down by them selves some times ya gotta slide it back kinda hard <, As in move seat forward and get a lil runn at it . But check se if tabb,s are bent and if you want seat,s too adjust and slide properly the plastic seat rail covers are a must have item . These look like lil plastic covers that go on top or slide over the seat rail itself about 12 inches long flat with a lipp on um too hold them on the seat rail . Sean
