Topic: EMPI oil pump with filter built on

Howdy,
Does anybody have a opinion on the EMPI oil pump with the built on filter for the type 1 motor?
We just got one sent us in a parts order but it wasn't what we ordered . It does looks interesting.

We are rebuilding a VW industrial motor on a saw mill and the pump/filter  will not fit but might be nice in a bug.
Good or bad?

Re: EMPI oil pump with filter built on

on these havent used one yet but can tell ya opinion on idea behind them . deal is on bugg,s t-1 if you continually tach 6 ,7,8, on the tachometer , Usually winding out thru the gear,s on a cammed motor << Usually being engle 110 , with 009 dizzy  << Per Say ? Even with it being let,s say 1600 cc stock bore ? You need a spin on style filter . The idea here being that the spin on trapp,s more metal debri from wear in the motor . Hi performance motors that continually tach hi rev,s are short lived motor,s with out a spin on style oil filter ! now way reall buggers do this is they tapp oil galleys on the case for what is called full flow system << Requires tapping while motor is completely apart usually but some do it any how while motor is together << Dont reccomend this ? So lett,s say case has been tapped for full flow right off main oil galley ? oil runn,s thru hoses too spin on filter then thru a aftermarket oil cooler usually relocated some where out of the fann shroud then back intoo the pump intoo the case . Now this new combo thing what it does is it full flows the pump itself wich oil passes thru the spin on filter only but ive seen where some types of these pump,s work with a remotely located aftermarket oil cooler also ? << these i dont like but as for the oil pump with just spinn on filter ? << combined with a dog house cooler motor on a 85.5 bore motor <, Being 1600 on dual releif case with engle say 110 and o41 head,s dual 34 ict weberos ?? Yeah nothin cleaner of a set up on 1600 cc Hi performer than a dog house cooler < Set up right ? But as i have not used this type of pump yett i would have question,s like does the spinn on filter interfere with the engine tinn ? <, Ifn it does can tinn be modified ? << Motor,s must be sealed top from the bottom on Volkswagen cars ! So leaves us with another possible application here Baja Buggy,s ? << My favorite but i like mine set up case full flowed with big arse motor,s so in my opinion thing,s are worthless lmao .   Sean

Re: EMPI oil pump with filter built on

The additional (and effective) filtering from the spin on filters is a definite plus, and your oil capacity is slightly increased as well.  The downside of the type you've got is that the filter sits right beside your exhaust - think about all that extra heat getting to your oil.

I prefer using a remote filter.  Full flow is on option, but not practical on an assembled engine.  You can get oil pumps with the coverplate plumbed to connect hoses to a remotely mounted filter.  Make sure you use quality fittings and hoses.  Benefits include increased oil cooling, oil capacity and filtration.  I mount mine on a bracket I made to bolt up with the bumper bracket and have never had a problem.
