Re: Stick Pops out of 1st Gear Upon Takeoff
check your motor mounts front and rear.
Re: Stick Pops out of 1st Gear Upon Takeoff
Thank you. I will be under the rig this weekend....The other thing I thought about is this:
When I replaced the transmission, I did not replace the very front assembly, (I think it's called the cone). It did not come with the tranny and was extra $50 bucks or so..
Is that a possibility....
I sure appreciate your help too.
Timo
Re: Stick Pops out of 1st Gear Upon Takeoff
Go under the rear seat and have some one shift it with Vice Grips after disconecting the shift rod. This will rule out the shifter being out of adjustment. See -> http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/0.gear_shift.htm
Re: Stick Pops out of 1st Gear Upon Takeoff
Thank you vicsvw. I am in process of adjusting my rear torsion bars. Is it possible that the rear end is so high that it could be causing a n alignment distortion?
I remember when I was a young feller, I raised the back end of my 70 mavrick so high that the drive line was out of wack and it clacked and creaked and bound to the degree I had to put it back to it's original position....
Is that a possibility?
Thank You Very Much;
Timo

Re: Stick Pops out of 1st Gear Upon Takeoff
Since you had this problem with both trannys, it sounds like the shifter lever might be out of adjustment. The shifter moves the shift rod in the tunnel fore and aft to shift the forks in the tranny nosecone. It also rotates to select the first/second gear fork or the third/fourth gear fork. Also the reverse which is a seperate fork. Loosen the housing at the base of the shifter lever and adjust the position fore and aft to get equal movement of the shift rod (You can see this under the cover under the back seat). You also need correct rotation of the shift rod to select the proper fork. Once you get the right adjustment, tighten the shift housing. I hope this helps. Fred W.
