Topic: Wobbly shifter - time to replace the bushings

Yes, me again.  My shifter is VERY loose so its time to replace the bushings.  I have never done this before and I can't figure out what I need by looking in the parts book.  Can you help me out?  Thanks,

Re: Wobbly shifter - time to replace the bushings

sherlockss: On the standard Beetle, you need to remove 2 inspection covers; one oval shaped plate under the rear seat and the other up front (rounded rectangular plate) by the head where the front beam is mounted. I'm not too familiar with the frame head on a Super but the process is similar....  You also need to remove the gear shift lever. BE SURE TO MARK THE LOCATION OF THE BOLT-DOWN PLATE WHERE THE GEAR SHIFT ATTACHES TO THE TUNNEL. Doing this will make the task of later finding all 4 gears and reverse a lot easier.  If you're talking about the front bushing through which the shift rod travels, well, it is definitely easy to do, provided that you disconnect the shift rod from the coupling under the rear seat inspection cover plate and slide the shift rod toward the front of the car after having removed the front inspection cover from the frame head. Once the shift rod clears the front bushing bracket, you can insert a new bushing (part number 111 798 259A) (kind of a split nylon cylinder with a structure that really only allows it to be fitted by sliding it into the bracket from the front) and retaining ring and then push the shift rod back through the newly installed bushing (be sure to use a bit of grease on the shift rod to keep things moving smoothly.) While you're back there by the rear coupling (part number 311 798 211) where the shift rod connects to the shift shaft of the nose cone on the tranny) be sure to check the rubber mounts in the coupling. Sometimes these deteriorate and allow for a lot of slop in the shifting process. Time to do both front and rear components: about 1-2 hours including time to clean things up and double check your work. If you ever have to do it again you can probably do it in a half hour! Good luck. Clancy

In addition to above you may want to check the condition of the nylon bushing Holder. My '61 needed a fixit kit for the mount that held the front nylon bushing.
