Topic: Starting Problems - Electrical?

Hello,

I am having problems getting my 68 beetle to start.  About a month ago the Generator stopped charging due to worn brushes.  I replaced the brushes and the generator started charging again.  However the battery was not holding a charge and the beetle would not start when it was shut off.  The battery is only a few months old.  When I boost the battery it starts right away.  The connections were cleaned.   I am baffled.  I am not getting any red lights on the dash.  It does not seem like it would be a regulator problem as there is current coming off the regulator.  Could the battery be a dud or could something be draining the battery?  I am baffled.

yes probably the battery but first letts check the regulator for sure see ifn were chargin too do this simply start the car and while runnin pull off the battery cable if car dies then either the generator or the voltage regulator is not workin but if car continues too run while negative post or positive post is removed then it,s the battery << Probably due too fact it was older and you drained it too far down burned a cell while the generator was on the blink / make sure ya buy a buggy battery with the orange positive post cover on it as the wrong size battery or not havin plastic orange cover over positive post will allow the spring,s in the back seat too ground out the positive post on battery shorting out the regulator or generator first time some gravity challenged individual sitt,s in back seat over top of battery starting your problem,s all over again Sean

Thanks for the advice.  I am going out right now to try this out.  I took the battery out and it looks a little bulged.  It may have frozen in the cold here during the few weeks I was waiting for brushes.  They were out of those things all over.  Just put a set in I got from http://www.cip1.com about two weeks ago.  I will post the results here!

Make sure the ground cable is conected to the Tranny. Als go under the car and short across the selonide. This will rule out the wiring to the starter. You might also try putting a hot jumper wire to the #15 side of the coil. See ->  http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/page_index.htm
