Topic: Engine pop

Just wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on what could cause an engine pop under load. Usually in higher gears it will do this occationally.
This is a new mexi engine 1600cc, with dual kadrons, pertronix point eliminator and 009 dizzy.  I thought maybe the mechanic may have adjusted the valves on the loose side for the break in period and maybe this could be causing it.  I have read that the 009 is the sort of Distributor which you pretty much have to stomp the gas in order to make it work correctly due to the weights.  Maybe this isnt true.  I am not sure what else would cause the engine to pop like this except maybe stale gas but it is on its second tank since its been running again. Unless maybe water is still in there due to it sitting for 7 years or so. Anyhow thanks for anyones input !

Re: Engine pop

Is the pop out the carbs or out the tail pipe?

If your valves were set too tight you might get a pop not too loose.

Check your timing at 3000rpm timing should be no more than 28*btdc

Re: Engine pop

Yeah fix the exhaust leak ! << Reason it,s poppin out the exhaust it,s suckin air intoo the exhaust C02 and oxygen combined with heat goes > Pop ! If it pop,s back thru carb this is timming or intake leak ? im bettin it,s exhaust tho under a load between shiftin gear,s etc fix exhaust leak ! now as for timming 28 degrees total advance at 3000 RPM will work But it,s better too understand it especially with a double 009 dizzy ? a better setting here is 28 ta 32 degrees total advance at 3500 rpm . The 3500 rpm being where a fairly stocked or mild cammed motor will plain out when reved << Kinda sounds like 4 th gear at 70 mph runnin down the road if ya play with the throttle you can learn where 3500 rpm is at cause motor plain,s out ? If not ? go get a Tachometer and play with it till ya learn where it,s at ? now 32 degrees on your degree pulley << Degree pulley is a must here . << Is the maximum advance any more than 32 degrees will cause motor too run hot and result in premature engine failure ? But 32 degrees is optimum and sought after but as the bushing,s in the dizzy wear it,s regularly referd too as 28 ta 32 degrees so i like 30 degrees 31 maybe with your pertronix ignition should be less fluctuation especially ifn the dizzy is fairly new might get 32 but fluctuation included no more than 32 degrees total advance ever ? No less than 28 degrees ever << Fluctuation included here ? Now that i xplained fluctuation here at 3500 rpm on degree pulley you can see how too figure out if your 009 dizzy is not workin properly or worn slapp out . Or even possibly with a cheap degree pulley that it might be workin back and forth on wood ruff key on the crank << Some what common problem with Tai Wann Degree pulley,s somethin ta look out for ? Now on valves adjustment too tight is worse than too loose ! Sett all valves at 006 thousandths both exhaust and intake << Note i really dont give a hoot what book say,s , or the buggy mech down street say,s etc set um .006 with fresh feeler preferably one hasnt had adjuster turned down on it bendin it all up or gouged out, or worn down too .004 thousandths etc . alway,s start with number 1 cylinder adjust both valves ? break all the valve adjuster,s loose even the ones that feel good like there adjusted etc. << Re-adjust um any how . Now when adjusting them what ya want here is too with your fingers tighten the adjuster screw down on feeler gauge till gauge wont move ? << fingers only or it will bend crease fold spindilate the feeler gauge etc but till gauge wont slipp back and forth then back adjusting screw off till there is just a slight dragg on the gauge tighten lock nut re- check the slight dragg on gauge . <<< May take few try,s ta gett it perfect but perfection is required here . adjust both valves on number 1 at TDC compression stroke then turn motor counter clock wise 180 degrees too the 0 on degree pulley adjust number 2 cyl valves then turn counter clock wise too number 3 cyl back too TDC mark on degree pulley  etc etc . Note i usually remove Dizzy capp and where the rotor points too number of cylinder im adjusting work,s as a good visual aide . Sean

Re: Engine pop

Thanks Sean for the detailed reply. I did like you said and checked exhauset and  the timing, looks like its right on.  the #1 valves seemed a little loose the valve closest to the front of the car has some play in it but I was told this would not cause engine backfires.  This is a new engine and has not had its first oil change yet. I am wondering if the mechanic gapped the vales a bit loose for break in.  He has been working on veedubs forever and seems to know what he going. Last night while on the highway going about 60 there was a rattling from the valves it sounded like and then a puff of smoke .  then the sound dissapeared although it still backfires and loses power when under load.   I will try not to drive it too much until I figure out what this is incase it is damaging the engine.
Thanks again for everyones replies!

Re: Engine pop

ok i answer in general but poppin and loss of power at 60 is definately somethin wrong dip stick ifn gettin hot is indication that motor is tryin ta lock down spinn a main or rod . yeah sounds like mech didnt get somethin right here on rebuild too me it happen,s / i would tear it back down see whats up take it back too the mech that rattlin noise is probably not the valves your hearin but the main bearing walkin back and forth on it,s pinn in the journal this often sounds like a valve rattle when in fact soon as it wobbles pinn out enough on bearing it will spinn the bearing and lock down sorry didnt realize the extreme here << Worst scenario thing miff,s me from time too time lol Sean

Re: Engine pop

Wanted to say thanks again for your reply regarding the backfiring bug engine.  It appears it was just as you described.  The engine is trashed according the mechanic.  He said he had never seen this happen with a factory engine but I guess there is a first time for everything.  He asked if I had overeved the engine but I had taken it easy being that it takes time for an engine to break in nicely. Anyhow luckily it was under warranty and another engine may be shipped to the mechanic. The supplier wanted to talk to the mechanic to see if there was a chance of shipping out some parts to fix the engine but I dont think that will cut it according to the mechanic as he claims it is trashed.  Has enyone had this problem with a factory engine or any engine?   I am not sure what happened here, but hopefully things will get straightened out.  I am not sure how the waranty works as far as installation goes. I am guessing that comes out of the buyers pocket to have a replacement installed.  Sometimes credit cards can be your best friend yikes)  .
