what weight oil does a 71 volkswagen beetle air cooled require?
Dandan... Take a look at the "oil light on..." post a few down from this one. I asked a similar question, and the general consensus is that 20w50 is a good all-purpose oil. Some have suggested straight 30w or 40w if you live in an area that gets super hot in the summer months. Hope that helps.

Yes I live in Huntsville Texas and I drive my 71 super bug everyday 50 miles a day 25 miles each way .My question is what is the best oil to use. It temp here in Huntsville is around 98 to 100 dueing the summer and 30 to 50 dueing the winter. I have been useing 3o weight.
Yeah lived in Texas Know for a Fact No Air cool Buggies in Texas ? Every Body there drives a full size ford or chevy, or a Tractor ? Proper Texan wouldnt be caught dead drivin a volkswagen ? If A Texan did own a Volkswagen ? Itd Be A Van out back some where on the property used too store farming equipment ? LMAO as far as conventional oil,s go ya all wanna runn 10/40 Castrol in summer time . Then 10/30 for month or 2 maybe in the coldest part of the winter ,when Ya all are gettin the ice storm,s . Ilive in So.Cal. High Dessert. << Buggy Mecca of the world. We Pretty much have the extreme of pine forested white snow, capped mountains, too Desserted below sea level elevation,s of extreme heat all with in 75 sqaure miles . << Meaning im in High Elevation Dessert here of Joshua Tree,s And pinion pines . If i drive 20 miles up side of the mountain im in Forested Pine Trees of Big Bear ski resort ut if i leave here drive 20 miles north im in one of the hottest dessert,s in the world <, Gate way too Death Valley ? So i run 10/40 pretty much all year round ? Less the winter is extreme during some years i switch over too 10/30 if we get lott,s of freezeing up in the mornins and snow level comes down within 5 miles of the house stick,s and stay,s . Sean
Well I have live here all my live and I know quite a few people to have air cool buggies and drive them. But their not what you would call proper Texan their Rednecks Texan. This is my second VW Bug.The first one was 20 years ago.Never found one that hit me just right till I found this one one years ago.
So what part of texas did you live in?
Buglay
Yeah lived there about,s Haskell Texas 40 miles north of Abiliene . Wife was born raised there . Grandmother , Uncle and Aunt still there every body else moved off. Ive noticed few air cool buggy,s runnin around Abiliene area . Just got back from there 2 week,s ago, spent few week,s out there re- modelin my uncles house . Fixin ta leave go back there in July too family re-union for couple more week,s startin in upper Baja Texas << O.K. But i live out here in S.O. Cal in Roy Rogers Country <, Mojave Dessert , were about 90 miles north of Los Angeles Ca. <, Buggy Mecca of the states here . Volkswagens not my actuall primary car of choice but due too child support Calif style < Sentenced too life of poverty ? All i can afford . Been doin buggy,s recreational style about 30+ years . Use ta work for one of the best Hi Performance engine rebuilders out here . So of course i think im one of the best there is . Actualy if it isnt a Type 1 in a rail im lost ? Then all the Rail,s have switched over too Subaru engines but im still doin bugg,s. Where ya from in texas and what are ya runnin ? Sean
There are at least a few Texans still driving (and working on) bugs. I bought mine in Houston and then proceeded to drive it 1100 miles to its new home in Kentucky. What a trip. It sure does get hot around there in August. Wished my '70 still had the a/c that someone decided to take out somewhere along the way.

The last Air Cooled beetles built up until July of 2003 used 15W40 from the factory and that is what the owners manual says. In colder climates I have found that 5W40 ( I am using a Mobil 1 synthetic product ) works better with the hydraulic lifters in non Mexican climates. In the past I have used 10W40 winter ( unless below zero for a long time then 5W30 & 20W50 summer regular oil in my conventional bugs.
Hey there Sean,
I live in Huntsville Texas. Sounds like you know what your talking about.LOL
So let me ask you this question? What kind of seats can I put in the front to replace the one I have? Do that have to be from another 1971 vw super beetle or can they come from another car?

Hi buglay,
I've lived in Texas all my life, so has my Bug. Since I've had it (1986), it's run Castrol 20/50 winter and summer (north and central Texas weather) and I've had great success with it, takes Texas heat (and cold) with no complaints. I understand that synthetic oils are a good way to go as well, although a combination of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and creature of habit personality traits have prevented me from switching to them (plus, I change my oil every 2500 miles religiously). Hope this helps you!

Er,.... sorry, not enough coffee this AM, I meant to reply to dandan.
Hey there Buglay . Huntsville ? Yikes Im happy ta say due too my uncles recent re-lease from incarceration ? I have no known kinfolk,s livin in that part of Texas LMAO Altho might be few makin plann,s ta move back ta Huntsville in the near future ? LMAO Now on seat,s << Big expense here cause of the high demand for um ? 1st lett ya know im not the regular super beetle guy out here in Cali we tend ta stick too smogg exempt car,s wich use too be 66 and back but as the law has progressed now too 74 and back supers are becomeing much more popular ? As for me im primarily the engine guy ? Due too fact that i worked in a machine shop for short period for one of the best in the Hi performance motor,s here in So. Cal. That and ive alway,s had a dune buggy or Baja or A rail . Gave up Rodeo for safe sport like ridin dirt bikes etc. lmao Wich i no longer do either do too fact cant participate in these type of sport,s cause my wife refuses too drive me too local Bar,s or the Emergency ward,s ? Motors what i do best ? OEM car,s where i runn intoo trouble but pretty knowledgeable on them too but as i said S. B. kinda lose me . Best bett here on seat,s is OEM on bugg,s we usually find um in good mechanical shape then buy seat covers too re- upholster them . Another alternative is Toyota MR2 seat,s or Toyota seat,s themselves ? As i have not ever done this im told they work out well , simply cut the frame from bottom of stock buggy seat,s <, So you have slider frame works then weld tabb,s too um then cut the sliders off Toyota seat,s and weld um too the original slider frame works of the buggy seat . << Least this is my understanding of what lott of buggers are doin . What year make model car your lookin ta robbb seat,s out of im not totally sure havin not done it my self but have been told theres few different types of cars primarily Toyotas that work out well ? Now as for the Super,s im not sure if frame work,s and slide rail,s are the same You would have too look do lil measurin . But like ta tell ya this ? Ive looked at the after market seat,s availiable in the Hot Vw,s magg,s <, Fine if ya got 800 buck,s ta blow on seat,s for a 2 seater Dragg car ? But few offer a folding bucket that allow,s for rear seat accesss and it,s my opinion with some re-search and scroungin the bone yards ? Possibly Kia,s or Nissans or the old Hugo,s <<Plentifull car,s that seem ta have a short life spann ? That some body might come up with a seat adapter system too adapt or weld to the seat slider frame work,s of the buggy seat,s ? << As possibly in a kitt form, and simply market the kitt too do something like this ? <, Idea ive tossed around ? As in say 200 at bone yard for seat,s ? kitt for say 50 buck,s or less 250 total for bucket seat,s that actually fold forward and recline ? << Idea here beat,s hell out what is being offerd in the Magg,s ? Note: primarily with me lott of reason i stick with OEM seat,s is i got Kidd,s and Grand Kidd,s And Nephew,s , neices etc . and we live in Communist republic of Californication State wich has very strict laws about car seat,s for the little ones ? So i kinda had go around did battle with roll cages in Baja Bugg,s ? Sean
Ok,
thanks Sean
If i come up with anything else I will give you a yell.
On second thought I will write sometime just to say hi how are you.
