Topic: new carb time

Well I think its time for a new carb....new kit in it and it  is still  wet after a drive...last kit, one of the studs fell off and now a bolt holds that side on.
I seen the thread about the german carb. Guess my question is, I see adapters to put the 31 carb on a 34 set up....will this give me better mileage of should i stick with a 34.  Im gettin about 35-36 mpg with the current wet one but the thought of fire sometimes crosses my mind in between dodging deer and rocks.  I drive mountain and river roads so my speed is about 45 tops, yes they call me granny when i get behind the wheel.

Re: new carb time

I'm getting 25MPG, if you are getting 34-35 then be happy, bugs usually get closer to 30 usually less. I'd stick with what you have or direct replacement, be sure all the jets are the same or put yours into the new one.
Send me your old, maybe I can get closer to 30MPG, (I have a 30/31).
Good luck

Re: new carb time

take it were talkin dual port ? Dont understand the wett issue here as in carb,s wett on out side is real badd buggy,s do burn ! But on the issue of 34 pict series V.S. the 30/31 pict series carb,s ? Yeah as far as stock carb,s solex family goes 30/31 pict is best carb ever made for buggy,s . 30/31 pict was primarily a single port application but around 71 ta 72 they were used for period of about year and a half on dual port motor,s with smaller manifold and end casting,s << Highly sought after by those in the know ! in i think around 73 due too fedral EPA smogg control << When all the BllSht started with all car,s <, Especially fords modified cleveland ???? ! << Ok i hav few Issues ? LMAO But any how volkswagen started using the 34 pict series wich by increaseing the CFM on the carb was primarily too volumize gas better so that engine would runn cleaner ? < Supposedly ! << All BllSht too me << Really do have issues with smogg control regulation,s ? Stinkin govt think,s every body is ignorant i guess ? But too continue 34 pict just cause it,s bigger doesnt mean that it will runn a motor faster or is a better choice for say a bigger bored motor ? Or that it will get better gas mileage ? But with jetting on  34 pict,s ya can volumize more gas for some application,s but this is not a per say Definate < As in you should run out do it thing ? But can tell ya this on a 30/31 pict on a 1600cc 041 heads and engle 110 cammed motor ? <, As with the smaller carb and what is often referd too as the european manifold . << Manifold was used in europe longer than in the states ? That i personally have used this combo and gott the motor too idle with a 110 cam . << Usually requires dual carb,s too get a reasonable idle out of a 110 cam << As for using the adapter plate ive done this also on same motor for sht,s and giggles > <, Didnt get the performance or it seemed not too work quite as well ? But got a reasonable idle with adapter plate . As for the stripped studd,s you can buy proper tapp with drill bit and tapp these out but it,s tricky at best then step stud ? << Personally i see no difference than a modified bolt with exception mine look,s more professional ? LMAO   Want more on carb,s ask  Can get took for 100 buck,s easy on solex trade in,s for Bocar Mexican carb,s Etc etc . Sean

Re: new carb time

If you don't run fast TurnPike speeds the SP carb will work great and at $119 compared to $149 it looks like a great idea. See ->  http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/Solex34pict.htm and check out the page links.  Vic.

Re: new carb time

Well, I was ordering parts and being in a weak position, my coil quit again and fan was shredded on top of it, I was 50 miles away from home at work and would have to spend the week there till parts came so I could get back home, lured me into a progressive weber. He said it would plug right in.....so cpl days laters i get the new fan put in, which didnt fit, they never ground the tits off the one side of the fan so it rubbed like crazy, the new carb and manifold that would plug right in was not a plug in app. i hacksawed, filed and ground metal to get it in and still gotta take it back out to grind so i can get an alt strap in.
Anyways the new carb seems alright cept its looking like Ill be lucky to get 30 mpg outta it even though it was kinda thrilling to drive up the mountain in 3rd gear at times.  Im thinking part of the reason I was gettin great mileage with the old carb was because it was wore out....The great mileage I got started after It was wet all the time.  about 30-31 before and 35-36 after, but after the burning up stories Ive read...New carb time.......

Re: new carb time

I did it, went the whole trip today without smoke, fire, shorts, breaks or walking.  Got the new carb, ya it was a progressive, after the salesman was done with me I was slobbering over mpg and hp.  Anyways, it was a good trip to work and back.  Climbed the river road in 4th gear all the way, a first, pulled the grade in 3rd, also a first.....cept for when the accel cable fell off the gas pedal as I was screaming up a straight stretch at a ripping 35mph.
Hit the gas station at the end and got 30mpg.  Not bad I figure, might be a little rich still, Ill play with it more this coming weekend as the adjustments are towards the fan side, oh ya that was a good design.....

Re: new carb time

Yeah a progressive . << I hate um but they work Use ta use a lott of um on Toyota pick up,s in the day on the 20 r and 22 r motor,s . Thing i hate about um is throttle cable and that hole on the pedal where the throttle stick,s thru and never seem ta get enough slack in the cable itself . Why i hate um . So deal is i do this any how is ya rebuild and carry xtra roller pedal,s and throttle cables and they even make a cable extender for throttle cables come in pretty handy . on the roller pedal,s ive tried welding the hole in then re- drillin it , then ive tried weldin washers on hole , Think finally i just pulled cable thru the hole and tacked a washer on the bend of the cable end itself <, Worked best but did me no good out on road less i carried a spare welded up then had too pull pedall assembly part way out too change throtle cable . Deal i remember with Proggressive i ran is that it required a lott more force too operate the throttle shaft on it than with stock carb . And that i got really good and fast at throttle cable R and R . I even went as far as throttle cable fabrication with aviation control cable i bought at swapp meet . But i bett she runn,s lott better , more power lmao Dont forget ta change the battery,s out in that flash light Lmao    Sean
