Topic: transaxles that have been sitting a long time

Hi gang,
I've got a few transaxles that have been sitting in my shop for many years and I was wondering if just sitting for 30+ years if they would be still good--I could see that the bearings could be rusty in the axles but what about inside --they all had 90w gear oil in but haven't been turned over.
Any idea if the case will break down - I mean like fall apart.
I've scattered a few motors that sat and they didn't look too good and some of the cases on them were "soft" in spots - with a screwdriver I could pick them apart

happy trails

Re: transaxles that have been sitting a long time

I HAD A FEW OLD "TRANNIES" HANGING OUT IN MY GARAGE BUT I FINALLY HAD TO ASK THEM TO LEAVE. BRINGING DOWN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, DON'T YA KNOW.

JUST KIDDING!

THOSE GEAR BOXES SHOULD BE FINE IF YOU HAVE KEPT THE WATER OUT.
ROLL THEM OVER FOR AWHILE AND TURN THE AXLE'S TO DISTRIBUTE THE OIL A BIT. NEW BEARINGS, AXLE, WOULD BE IN ORDER B4 USING.

Re: transaxles that have been sitting a long time

If they haven't turned over in 30 years the input shaft will be really rusty.  Even though they were coated in oil when used, it will have long since dried off the top shaft.  Your damp climate doesn't help.

Re: transaxles that have been sitting a long time

Ok I got some help moving the transaxles and have spun most of them over, I mounted a handle on a old clutch disk, just to see if they would turn and shift so far so good. None seized
What I found was that I just can't have enough good parts taking up space in the shop- or so it seems.

thanks for the replies

Fill it up with diesel Fuel and drive around the block then drain and fill with 90w. The 90 weight can get very hard in bearings and you want to remove this as soon as possible.  Vic. http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/page_index.htm
