Topic: Leaded/Unleaded

Good morning guys, hope you can help.

I have a 1971 1200 standard Beetle. I usually run it on lead
replacement petrol but this is getting more and more difficult to
find. I'm been told that I can run it on regular unleaded without a
conversion as the 1971 models have hardened heads and therefore
won't be damaged.

Anyone know much about this?

Thanks in advance.

Jim.

Re: Leaded/Unleaded

Where are you? What octane is available? In most of the U.S. you can
get 91-93 gas. Any stock bug will run on that. Most stock bugs will
run on 87, 85 may have problems on hot days. These are only loose
guidelines, bugs like people may be very unique. Some bugs must have
the good stuff, some will burn anything. Don't let it 'ping' can be
very destructive. Valve cooling/lube is not an issue unless you try
LPG [no].

Re: Leaded/Unleaded

I'm in the UK. I'm not sure what octanes are available, it's only
ever listed as unleaded or lead replacement. I'll check it out, see
what the local garage can tell me. Excuse my ignorance, but what do
you mean by "Ping"?

Thanks for the reply.
