Topic: RPM increase from clutch

Some time ago, (03-01-04), I posted a message about an increase in
rpm's when I let out the clutch. It was suggested to check and see
if the accelerator cable is wrapped around or near the clutch cable,
plus other suggestions. I followed the suggetions to no avail. It
only happens when the car is in gear. After a few seconds the rpm's
drop and I can go about my business, but change gears and it happens
all over again. I only notice the most in 1st and 2nd gears. Any
other ideas?????

Answer a few things for me: When you let the clutch pedal OUT the
RPMS Increase? What if you are in neutral and let the clutch pedal
OUT does the RPMs increase? If you are stopped and let the clutch
pedal OUT does the RPMs increase? Did you hook a timing light to the
engine and check to see if the timing changes when you let the
clutch OUT? Is the car a four speed? Did you have someone watch the
throttle on the carb to see if it opens a little bit when you let
the clutch OUT? I tried to find your old post from the date you
gave, but I couldn't find it. Also, if you push the clutch IN right
away does the RPMs decrease?

If it happens at idle this suggestion is no good, but if it only
happens when you shift gears, perhaps your manifold is loose,
causing the carb to rock backwards and pull the throttle arm each
time you let the clutch out after shifting? Just an off-the-wall
thought that came to mind when reading your post. Good Luck,

In theory, A severe amount of crank end-play could vary the timing
?!?

Just pushing in the clutch and letting it out doesn't do anything put
if you put it in gear and let it out, the rpm's increase all by
itself. This allows you to actually take off without using the gas
pedal but then it's like the pedal pops back to where it should be
and the rpm's go back to normal.

What it does is this: If you have a BUNCH of end play,and the
engine is running with the crankshaft forward all the way, and you
push the clutch pedal in (which pushes the crankshaft toward the
rear of the car) the gear on the crankshaft (which turns the
distributer gear) moves toward the rear and bumps the timing gear a
few degrees, which in turn, turns the rotor in the distributer an
equal amount. You can see this on an old motor with excessive
endplay by watching the distributer rotor move when you push in and
out on the pulley.
