Topic: Help me find parts for a mexican bug

I recently aquired a 1982 mexican bug but as i wanted to buy general
parts for it noticed that here in the US parts are generally refered
by year model of the car and the latest model that i see parts
offered for is 1979..
i would like to know if my 1982 model is similar to any other model
so i can buy parts for it here in the US

what would be the equivalent?..
your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Help me find parts for a mexican bug

The Mexican bugs in 82 may have several variations from the 70s US
models. Most of the Mexican cars were not the "Deluxe" models we
got, and did not have fresh-air vents (only defroster vents in the
corners fo the windshield), still used the swing-axle rear
suspension, etc. The car could even have been made with a 1200
engine instead of the 1600 we had, but by now that may have been
changed out, along with nearly every other "special" part.
I have 2000 and 2001 Mexican Beetles with some of these quirks, but
they use a fuel-injected 1600 engine. (I'm in Austin, TX)
Miguel Padres at btlmex.com imported "remanufactured" Mexican cars,
and still sells parts from the Mexican dealerships on his website.
He can probably help you get anything you need if it is still
available in Mexico. He's a good guy, (UT grad) but sometimes slow
to respond.

Re: Help me find parts for a mexican bug

My bug started out as a '82 vw de S.A. What they are is a mix of
older and newer stuff. Very few parts are uniquely 'mexican'. The
turn signals in the bumper are mex only and are easily available as
'california style'. Mex-bugs are standard bugs only, no supers, no
convertables, no sunroofs, no ghias, a/c yes. The front end is a
type 1 balljoint. The brakes are the same as a pre '66. Front heat
only, no parking brake lite, single heater lever. Mex bugs have very
heavy pans. Trans is the same as a '68 [long] swingaxle. My bug
still had the dp1600, I think it was originaly f.i. , mine had the
'68 style solex. If a part is: 49-77 type 1, you can use it. If it
says: 67-77, you can usually use it. Body stuff is 73-77 mostly. Be
very careful with 74-77, Have someone identify the part, many are
different. To date, I have always been able to use U.S. parts with a
little trial and error.
