The 155R15 tires were used all through the Beetle production in
Mexico that ended last year. You can still get the factory tires
from:
http://www.btlmex.com/index.asp?PageAct … ProdID=186
for $43. These are made either by General or Continental (but the
Conti is a private brand name). I've been using them for a few years
and like them.
Most owners change to the 165R15 size that was used on the later IRS
cars, but some feel the 155 handles the Swing Axle camber change
better. The 165R15 are fairly common (Sears, etc.)

have them on my 71 & 72 Ghia's and they work fine. They are about
$37.00 ea.

Darby,

I have a 65 and just took the tires off...im going with 165sr15 by
cooper. My tire guy here in ct gave me a good price... when i
restored my ghia i put coil overs on the rear... i know it is a
swing axle and any how i have the new stock ones and i am strongly
thinking about putting those back on due to the "tuck under" i get
with the coil overs.... I thought i could use the coil over to get
the rear ride hight a bit higher but i am afraid of the previously
mentioned tuck in or negative camber... Whats your thoughts? and
why do they sell them for the model yrs with a swing axle?

@@ I personally would not run coil overs on a swing axle car. they
are too stiff and cause as you say tuck under. A good friend rolled
a very nice bug due to among other things these shocks. It is not
real hard to reset your rear torsion bars to fix this sag. My '64
conv had a saggy ass and it took one notch down on the outer spline
and two up on the inner spline. This is usually the formula you'll
need.
