Topic: engine getting hot #3 and 4

after driving my bug on the freeway i cheeked my enging and found
that i could not touch the dipstick. it was very hot. usually wheb
i do this check i am able to check the oil without a problem. i let
the car cool down and then checked the oil it was ok. when i got
home i let it cool overnight and set the valves the next day. all
four valves were tight closer to 004 than 006. i loosend the valves
up 6 and adjusted timing. the engine still is running hot. what
else should i look for at this point. maybe another engine? i
drive over 75 miles to work one way and don't want to be stranded
anywhere. anyway thanks. talipp...

singleport 40horse engine. don't know the mileage but i bought it
as a short block from a garage sale about two years ago i drove to
work once a week. and initially i noticed that i was loosing power
like the clutch was slipping. anyway any clues or advice will
help.

talipp: If just 3 & 4 are getting hot then check for air leaks
first

Re: engine getting hot #3 and 4

If just 3 and 4, it could be something (paper, rag, leaves)sucked in
through the fan and stuck on the oil cooler. Also check compression.
Poor ring sealing causes overheating. New piston/cyl set, new valve
guides and new exhaust valves are not expensive and always a good
investment if you want to keep an old motor alive for a few more
years. Cheers, Brian

>>> ok i adjusted the valves to oo6. found that they were tight about
oo4. then reset the timing. no great improvement. i then checked
the spark plugs. 3 and 4 were blackend but not oily. after checking
1 and 2 and replacing them all i noticed that only 3 and 4 was
firing. checked the wires and i have spark to the plugs of 3 and 4
but the pistons are not being fired. i can pull the wires to 3 and 4
with no change in the engine. the engine is running only on
cylinders 3 and 4. could the distributor be in the wrong way? what
would cause only 3 and 4 to fire and 1 and 2 not to fire? again any
clues or advice will be appreciated. thanks again talipp.
