Topic: Timing

My air-cooled manual specifies engine timing based upon the year.
How do I know what year to refer to when the engine has been swapped
out, pistons and jugs likely changed (to a larger size?), etc.,
etc.

Re: Timing

the start for a modifed motor like mine is also. should be at about
7.5 btdc so i would start there and see how that is and that is
asuming that you have a 009 dist if that doesn't work try tdc and
adjust until smooth idle and drive to see if it is missing then i
would suggest taking to a bug shop and let them help you. it really
all depends on how the motor was put togiether ,but you want it to
spark on compression stroke

Not even close. If you have an 009 distributor then you need to set
the timing with it running at about 3K rpm's and set it at 25-37
BTDC, 7.5 won't get it done and either will just getting a smooth
idle. Make sure you read the instructions that came with your
distributor. If you have a stroker or a bored out engine then you
need to consult someone that knows those engines.

Re: Timing

I agree with Anthony. The quickest sure fire way to destroy an
aircooled VW engine is to time it "by ear". DO NOT drive the car
timed in this manner!

Re: Timing

don't get me wrong i agree with anthony about setting at 3k rpm 25-
37 ,but at idle the will be at around 7.5. still case in mind can he
keep it running long enuff to sett it that way ,and does he have the
know how. that is the main piont i was trying to get to mainly that
if he is unsure of how the motor was put togiether it would be hard
to set the timing and that he should take it to some one to help him
identify what would be the right timing my friend who works on vw
for a living at a known place in my town is the one who told me the
whole 7.5 timing it is also stated in many books john muir, dumbees
guide to vw's and so forth it does not state that it is the right
timing but it is a place to start if you are not sure of how to set
timing or where it should be set
