Topic: Struts

Hello. Well my front struts are beyond worn, and I finally got the
money together to buy new ones. I also bought a front disc brake
conversion kit. I figured it would be easiest to replace the struts
after I have removed the brake drums, and before I install the
discs.

I was wondering if anyone here had any experience changing the struts
in a superbeetle. I was going to buy one of the inexpensive spring
compression kits I have seen. Should I leave this to a
professional, or is this something I can do myself. The Volkswagen
Service Manual makes it sound pretty easy. I'm just not sure how
how much I should tighten the springs down before I remove the strut
cartridge. I have heard that this can be dangerous if you are not
careful. I certainly do not want to break my nose off (or worse) in
the process.

Any help/info would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Struts

You don't need a spring compressor if you do it a certain way.
All you need is two jacks, one to jack the front of the car up, and
one to put under the lower ball joint to compress the spring (on the
car).
I am going to over-simplify this to keep it from getting confusing.
Basicly, do not remove the shock assembly from the car. Jack the
front of the car up to get it off the ground, remove the four front
sway bar bolts that hold the two front bushings in place, let the
sway bar hang down, put your second jack under the lower ball joint
of the side you are working on,jack the second jack up enough to
remove the big round collar nut that is located inside the spring
area that holds your shock insert into the shock housing. with the
nut all the way off it's threads, lower the second jack until ALL
tension is removed from the big spring,(you MAY have to disconnect
the brake line horse shoe connector from the body and let your brake
line sag a bit, you will see why later. remove the second jack and
do the same to the other side. Now with the spring tension removed
from both sides, pick a side to work on and remove the upper three
bolts that hold the upper shock mount to the car body. Reach in to
the fender well and pull downward on the upper shock mount to get
the whole assembly to hang out side the fender. Pull up on the upper
shock mount to remove the whole assembly from the shock housing
leaving the spring still stuck in the shock housing if possible.
Just remember, don't put the spring in upside down when you go back
together. Now with the shock insert off the car and on the bench,
remove the 22mm upper nut and remove every thing and put in order on
your bench. Replace the shock insert, DON'T forget to slide the big
collar nut on the new shock at this point or you'll be mad later.
With every thing installed back on the shock insert that you
removed, install the shock insert back in the shock housing, install
the shock and shock housing back into the fender well and ito place,
installing the three upper nuts and torqueing them at this time.
Stop on that side and do the same to the other side. Now... jack up
the second jack on either side untill you can get the shock insert
to go all the way into the shock housing, then install and tighten
the collar nut. With the collar nut tight, go do the same to the
other side. Re-install every thing else that you removed and you are
done, with no changes made to your alignment at all. The front
wheels need to be off the car to do this, but your drums can stay on.
Just remember, you are using the second jack as a spring compressor.
Also, you might wan't to print this out because I'm not gonna write
it out again! Also be careful and don't scratch your paint in the
fender area.
