Topic: '79 AIR FLOW METER

HELP!!! My mechanic has just told me that I need a new Air Flow
Meter for a 1979 Super Beetle, that the 5 or 6 remanufactured/used
ones that he has tried have not been satisfactory, and that there
are no new ones available. He is sure that the problem is with the
meter because he has a "good one" that he uses for diagnostic
purposes that makes the car run just fine. The part number he has
referred me to is (Bosch 0 280 200 006) and VW part number 043 906
301. Thanks for any help.

California Import parts http://www.cip1.com also has them. Just
out of curiousity, how well do you know this mechanic? The AFC does
not have much that can go wrong with it. The main problem they have
with age is "tracks" getting worn into the circuit board from the
"wiper" that runs across it as the car accelerates. When I finally
get the money to rebuild my motor I plan on replacing mine, just to
be safe. But I question whether the AFC is the problem. I find it
odd that 5 of them failed his "test". Is it having problems passing
an emission test or is it running poorly?????

Re: '79 AIR FLOW METER

I really appreciate all of the help. i would be more than happy to
post the Mechanic's name if it's appropriate. In the mean time, all
that I can say is that I've had my car to him a number of times over
the past 3 or 4 years and that I have found him to be trustworthy.
I know that it seems strange the Air Flow Control? is the problem
and that 5 or 6 reman/used replacements have all failed. My problem
is that I have had great trouble finding anyone that will work on my
bug who knows will work on a fuel injected motor. I'm certainly
open to other suggestions rather than just trying to replace parts
until the car runs better. Thanks, again, for the help.  Rick

Hi again Rick. I have the l-jetronic fuel injection on my bug as
well. I'm not an experienced mechanic by any means, but I have
monkeyed around with the injection system. I might be able to help
if I know what the symptoms are and what has already been replaced.
You can email me if you'd like, I would be more than happy to try
and help you out.
