Falure of the control module, or bad connection between the module
and trans has been fairly common with the 93 EV. I had an extreme
"clunk" on part-throttle downshift that caused the dealer to replace
the transmission under warranty, and the new one did exactly the
same thing. The control module would not hold it's "basic setting"
memory, and replacing the module fixed it.
However, slipping and such sounds more like an internal problem. The
93 does store transmission error codes, and they can be read by a VW
dealer or shop with a true VW compatible diagnostics system, not a
common "OBDII" code reader. An excellent interface and software for
home use (lots of VW shops use it too) is www.ross-tech.com
"VAG-COM."
The main problem with EVs from a service standpoint is that most
dealers know almost nothing about them, as they sold so few. I found
many dealers would not even look at mine, claiming their lifts
couldn't handle it. (Even if they also sold full sized US vans.
Obviously an "out" allowed by VW for dealers that didn't want to
handle them.)
You might try the tech forums at Bentley Publishers for advice.
