Topic: Oil Change Interval

Greetings to all:

The winter rebuild on my '70 Baja is going well. After LOTS of
practice (especially overhead!), I finally got under the car
yesterday and MIG welded the new front tranny mounting bracket in
place. Relatively easy to do and I'm satisfied with the results. Now
it's on to the motor, a relatively stock 1600 SP (009 distributor
w/pointless ingition system, dual "buggy" exhaust, EMPI air cleaner,
carefull set-up of carburation and timing. Runs well, uses
approximately 1/2 cup of oil every 1500 miles.)

I'm fitting one of the oil pumps that has a "spin-on" filter mount as
part of the cover plate casting.

I've always changed the oil every 1500 miles, cleaning the oil screen
at the same time. Can anyone provide a recommended oil change
interval when using a "spin-on" filter? Also, will the screen still
need to be removed and cleaned? And if so, how often?

Thanks for all your help. I had a good running motor going into this
project and I hope to keep it that way.

Best regards to all,

Gerry Cullan

Re: Oil Change Interval

Your new filter will do the filtering and the screen really is just
there you can almost forget about it. I would go 3,000 and adjust
your valves and oil change.

Re: Oil Change Interval

On the Mexican Beetles with the spin-on filter pump the VW factory
recommends 7500 km (4600 mile) changes. Of course they want to sell
replacement cars...
