Topic: Bad starter
Hi I need to change my started in my 92 jetta carat and I heard you
have to jack the engine in order to keep it from falling out. Is
this true and if so any advice?

@@ To change the starter ?? No it is just two bolts and a few wires.
A very simple operation. The upper bolt has an 8mm internal allen
head.

The 92 should be the A2 chassis, and I'm not sure about it; but
starting in 93 with the A3 chassis the front engine mount bracket is
held on by the starter bolt, and the first step in the Service
Manual for replacing the starter is to attach the engine support
frame from above to take the load off the mount...
TomB is right, starting in 1985 (and I am talking about the manual
transmissions, not the automatics) you have to support the engine
somehow to take the load off the front mount when you change the
starter. I have had some success by just jacking the motor up a
little bit with the jack under the oil pan, I haven't bent an oil
pan yet. Be careful if you do it this way because the jack could
slip if you are not careful and cause damage to your engine or
worse, yourself!

@@ I hear you guys but the front mount is really just a torque
limiter on the A2s............OOps, no it's not......... I'm
thinking A1 chassis as in Rabbit / Cabrio. I have never had to
support anything, simply loosen the collar on the core suppport for
added mobility on A1's A2 you can do with a jack on the pan as
stated above. Thanks noticing !
Darby, what exactly is the collar for the core support?

The collar for the front engine torque limiter (front motor mount )
on an A1 car. The core support is the front body cross beam the ties
the frame rails together, the radiator core sits on top of it (
Radiator core support ). Some folks will also call the front panel
that the headlights mount to and the top of the radiator hangs from
a core support but VW calls that part a "front Panel"
