Topic: Engine hard to start

Well, this just started happening recently. I have a 1977
fuel-injected Super Beetle which I drive maybe once a week depending
on the weather. I owned the car for a year now, and there was never
any problem with starting it up, even in freezing temperature. But
for the last 2 or 3 weekend drives, the engine began having
difficulty starting. It would crank and turn over, but would not
start. It would take 3 or 4 tries and stepping on the gas a few
times for it to finally start. Once the engine starts, everything
is fine, but if the engine is turned off again, it would be hard to
restart.
The owner's manual says there's no need to apply the gas when
cranking the engine because the fuel-injection system would supply
the correct air-fuel mixture.
I don't think it's a battery problem because the battery is new and
all electricals, lights, and radio function normally. Also, new
fuel lines were installed by a VW shop about 9 months ago.
I'm not sure where to begin looking to diagnose the problem; does
anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate any feedback.

Re: Engine hard to start

First thing to try: a fuel additive that helps water in the tank
disperse. Get it at any parts store. Rarely driven cars often build
up condensation. This can cause hard starting, then it may run
rough, then clear up and run fine, until it sits for a while.

Thanks totenkoff,

That's exactly what the problem is. I bought a can of fuel additive
and dumped it into the fuel tank yesterday before filling up.
Today, the car started right up without hesitation and restarting it
posted no problem either.
This is a great website with a lot of knowledgable, helpful people.
Thanks again,
