Shifting into a gear won't have anything to do with blowing fuses.
Check all of your wire connections in the engine, something isn't
connected correctly. As for swapping out your distributor, a 009
should work fine, just make sure you have it in the right way. The
distributor drive shaft has an offset slot in it, so the distributor
can only go in one way. Then make sure you change the points and
condenser as well. Also, be sure to block off the vaccum line from
the carb that used to connect to your distributor. Finally, the
best way to set the timing is statically with a 12volt test lamp.
just turn the key to the on position and hand turn the engine to
firing position for No 1 cylinder. If you have everything connected
correctly then the light should go on.
