Topic: correct timing for AE w/ 009

I'm having trouble doing my timing and would appreciate help. I have
engine code AE running a Bosch 009 Distributor. So I'm not sure
where to set it. All the numbers I've gotten are for vacuum advance.
Does anyone else have this setup? Where do you set your timing to?

Re: correct timing for AE w/ 009

Jason, I have an AH engine with a .009 distibutor, and I've read at
least two different opinions from two highly skilled vw mechanics.
One says 10d before tdc, and one says 7.5d before tdc. I have better
and smoother acceleration with the 7.5d, BUT, the mechanic (Bob
Donalds at Boston Engine) who prefers the 10d setting is extremely
good at these engines, and can explain his reasoning at his website
www.bostonengine.com He has a listing of subject advice, one of
which is the .009 timing advance. It's quite detailed. Good luck

>The correct way to time a 009 is with a timing light and a degreed
crank pully. Rev the engine to 3000 RPM's to achieve full advance
and set the distributor to 29-30 degrees before TDC for a street
motor. More and you will toast the motor. You can not time it static
because you can not predict what total advance will be. Also, there
are more than one variant of 009's so they have different advance
curves.
