transmission

I once owned a type 3 fastback 2 lt. fuel injected auto. Iam now
considering buying a type 2 camper from a friend. Iam however struck
with something of a dilemma: I like the idea of the camper for the
surfing safari we're planning but I am attached to the idea of an
automatic transmission. Is it possible to take an auto from a type 3
and stick it under a type 2. I know for the purists this may seem
like something of a butchers approach but comfort is as much the
issue in my situation as maintaining the overall originality of the
car.

I would appreciate any input you may have on the subject.
