Topic: Volkswebbin Issue

Who is in charge of this website?? I would gladly work with anyone
who wants to make this board a little more modern. A good search
function would be great! We can transfer all posts made on this old
board over to a more streamlined, searchable, MODERATED cool place
to be. If anyone is interested, lets get together and do this. I
have a WEB Design background and LOVE VWs!!! Lets hear your
thoughts.

Re: Volkswebbin Issue

Sean,

Thats exactly what I am talking about, we all use this site and if we
can get enough input from each other we could make our Volkswebbin
website state of the art. Now the hard part is figuring out who
actually runs this place. Get all the data from all the posts we
have here, transferring it to an up to date NEW forum, where it is
searchable. I dont know about you, but I cant search the post
archives here. Then add places like Sean is talking about.
Lets fix this place up just like we do our VWs. I am willing to pay
for it and do alot of the work to make it like we want it.

The owner is ahead of you guys, but obviously lacks time to work on
it. Go to:

and see what he has in mind.

To
a

degree,
I
concur....and
Darren
has
tried
it.
In
May
2003
he
took
the
bold
step

launched
a
"new"
Volkswebbin'.
Take
a
look
at
the
thread:

and take a look at the new site he has linked.

Great "modern" look, in fact if you weren't careful, you wouldn't be
able to tell if you were on the ShopTalk Forums or the Samba, or
several other sites. Several of us went over there and registered.
Bottom line: It never took hold. (take a look at the single ad
posted in November in the classifieds there....I sure hope he didn't
need to sell that Fastback quickly) Why? Well, my guess is that
until you totally pull the plug on the Volkswebbin' "Classic", most
of us don't have enough momentum to justify leaving an old site with
which we've all grown familiar. Kind of like the cars we drive. Sure
I like the heater in my wife's car on the below zero mornings we've
had recently, but it hasn't stopped me from driving my '65 every
day. Why? It's not safer, it leaves my clothes smelling of old oil
fouled heater boxes, the headlights are dim, etc.etc. I guess that
I'm just more 'tuned' to it than I probably should be.

As for the search function, yep, you're right... the old software
just can't handle the mass of data here. Moderator? Again, it would
really be helpful on occasions. But look at the other sites that do
have moderators; sometimes I wonder just what their moderators do?
We have our occasional "spoiled brats" but usually their attention
spans are limited and they tire easily.

OK, that's probably more like 9¢, from me. It will be interesting to
hear what others have to offer. By the way, the utter lack of frills
(graphics, etc.) on this site allows it to load so much quicker for
me on my dial up than the modern sites. Your mileage may vary.

I think you can send him a message off the new board (see link on
prior message), but the real issue was his figuring out how to
migrate the database of old messages and info to the new BBS. This
can't be done remotely...
I'd rather he pulled the plug and just started the new one fresh, as
the history on this BBS is so huge it is hard to find anything
anyway...

Re: Volkswebbin Issue

John,

Searching can be done easily enough through Google, as someone
helpfully pointed out a few months ago. A Google program scans this
site once a day. Just plug your query into Google and put
'site:oroad.com' after it, and hit Search. I remember starting a
minor war in 2002 when I suggested a moderator (and I'm not claiming
I was the first). The idea went down badly; and at the end of the
day, the jerks always seem to get lost as real users keep posting.

As with Clancy, I thought the graphix and pictures at New
Volkswebbin' looked good, but they made my browser foul up. And it
never really took off. I think it would have been better to make the
changeover in one hit - store all the old posts first of all, then
shut the forum down completely and just provide the link to New
Volkswebbin'. Or maybe this site could be kept as a read-only
archive of info, linked to the new version.

Personally I have no problem with this site as it stands. I don't yet
see - or maybe I just don't understand - why change is necessary
right now. But if I HAD to migrate to a new site to keep up with the
regulars I would do so, and I'll try it if they will. Maybe Darren's
new site deserves a second shot?

Re: Volkswebbin Issue

Ok,, I got the hint to shut up about updating this site from 1980. I
was just trying to contribute to Volkswebbin because I think its a
great place with great people. I wanted to give the people here
something better and searchable so that all this advice can be
referenced at any time.

As well as a search function, it would be nice to have a translation
function to translate what Sean posts into English.

Re: Volkswebbin Issue

John: Please don't misunderstand, I don't think thar it's that we're
opposed to change (well, maybe we are!), and I think Samf said it
very well. So long as this site is "functional" (even without
searchability) it just keeps going. And his google suggestion works
very well. I also agree that if the current data base and current
postings could be easily migrated to a new platform we'd all be
there in a second. But I do like the "tree" (or whatever it's
called) to view the progress and structure of a thread. I also like
the sort "by date" function. It allows me to quickly view the latest
entries. Get in touch with Darren and see what his plans are. He may
really appreciate your help. Clancy

Re: Volkswebbin Issue

The only urgent problem I have heard of with the site, at least as it
stands, is that eventually the servers that run Volkswebbin' simply
won't be able to handle the volume of data contained in tens of
thousands of posts, and will shut down. That definitely deserves
some attention. I love this site but would hate to see it get too
smart for its own good...
