Topic: vw radio, questions for darby

Darby,
I have a few questions and thank you for your patience.
Soon I will have my new mexican bug, I am having it shipped here from
arizona.
would a new volkswagon radio fit, it would be din sized correct?
this way it has a stock look and the little vw emblem correct, I
have not looked at a new vw so I just wondered.
Who manufactures the highest quality carpet, I plan to replace the
stock because of the long shifter thing, I don't recall if he made
the modification you had spoke about, It has a cut pile and I prefer
loop.
I recieved my title, a salvage title, how did you ensure your car
for a proper value, collector insurance with limited number of
driving miles, or normal insurance, and how did you prove the
value.
thanks again, and Miguel said hello
thanks for your time
David,
Oh one more, when the car needs a new muffler do you have to buy the
expansive beetlemex until, I see very few one tail pipe mufflers,
is there a cheaper way around it? do these last long
thanks darby

Re: vw radio, questions for darby

I'm sure Darby will chime in, but here's my input:
The Mexican Beetles have a standard DIN radio cutout, so the newer VW
radios will fit. Just cut through the dash pad around the blank
square with a box cutter. I put a Blaupunkt CD unit in my wife's
without problem - but still haven't put in front speakers until I
get her AC unit put in.
I think Wolfsburg West has the BEST carpet out there, but the real
German wool squareweave is expensive (like hundreds of dollars). The
synthetic is more reasonable.
I had first insured mine (under Farmers in Texas) at a declared value
by providing a copy of the Btlmex invoice. No additional appraisal
was required. The collectors version was not an option as I drive it
contantly. Since the hailstorm (which wasn't covered) I've just
dropped back to plain liability. If it goes, it goes. (It is just a
car - a special one, but still...)
The muffler/cat unit is very well made, and my 3-yr old (driven
daily) is holding up great. Up north in the salt it may be another
matter. I plan to stay with stock as the Digifant ECU expects the
stock tuning and backpressure, and you need the O2 sensor in the
4-in-one pipe to function properly, or the FI will not work right.
They are expensive though. Since I have two cars I will likely
spring for a spare while Miguel is still in business.
I am also working on a tech manual for the Mexican cars, as VW won't
admit one exists. I've made up adapters to connect the diagnostics
port to a standard VW scan tool, and have most of the
troubleshooting and adjustment procedures documented. I'm working on
getting it posted to a website in a couple months.

The radio / cd that is in my Blue Last Edition from the factory is
not available, nor does it have a VW logo on it.
For my red car since I hate all the chrome plated multi light display
radios I took my time and searched for a plain jane Am/Fm/Cd player.
I couldn't find one. Just before Christmas I was in Walmart and on
an end display in their Auto section I found a "special". A nice
Pioneer Super Tuner am/fm/cd with plain black face and 4 speakers
for $99.00. I cut the dash pad from the back with a charp knife
usinf the DIN cut out as a guide and it popped right in.
Here...it is still available:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. … 944%3A3947

For the rear I bought a factory VW read speaker deck from Miguel and
it holds the 6x9s that came in the kit. For the front I got a set of
kick panel mount for the round speakers from J-Bugs ( I think thats
where as I had them in stock for several years), I used a factory
antenna from Miguel. If you have A/C in the car you will need to
modify the rear deck as I did. A stock VW radio like a Jetta or
something used will fir in the dash. It ends there. They are "A" WAY
the hell too expensive at over $500.00 new and "B" really not user
friendly to wire up as the Bug uses the wrong ignition switch and
doesn't have provisions for the add'l power / alarm wires. "C" don't
come with any of the wires or plugs "D" wont work w/the Bugs
antenna.
If you plan on re-carpeting the whole car, take note that the carpet
in the new Mexico cars is actually a thick upholstery and the front
cowl pieces are clamped in along the rear edge like how the
headliner is over the door. You'd most likely need to knock off a
few spot welds to remove it but I never looked that close. I concur
on everything that TomB said. I wonder however .....how the car
would react to using a '71 Bus muffler with a single stock tailpipe
beetle, you'd have to weld a boss into it for the Oxygen sensor to
thread into and cut off / weld closed the pre heater pipes.
My car has a stock '65 title and chassis, I insured through JC
Taylor as I have my split window insured through them. They offer
full coverage cheap but want to ensure the car is garage kept and is
driven less than 7.5k / yr. I pay less per year for both cars than
I did quarterly for the Split Window alone through State Farm. The
split window they wanted some paperwork and photos, for the Mexi
just a phone call & e-mail picture. It is insured as it is titled as
a rebuilt 1965.
Where do you live I have forgotten, I know I responded to you
before.
Regards, Darby
