Topic: smoke out the exhaust

I have smoke coming out the left exhaust. I cant find the oil leak
and if that is the problem I dont know where to begin. I just
replaced the whole left side of my engine, head, cylinders, valves
pistons , rings etc. I have know I idea what to do. If anybody has
any ideas they would be greatly apreciated.

@@ I'll assume you are talking about stock air cooled beetle and not
a '65 Oldsmobile. Why did you replace the whole left side of the
engine ? Burn up a cylinder ? The stock air cooled bug muffler is
an open can, if you are getting smoke only out of the left side I'd
say you had damage to the #3 cylinder correct ? This cylinder dumps
out into the left side of the muffler, if you scored up a cylinder
before, all the oil that blew by would have been plastered directly
on the rear inner face of the muffler. As this now burns off and
smoked it will come out the first opening it comes to ( left side ).
The #4 cylinder dumps out into the right side of the muffler after
going through a tube as long as the heat exchanger. You'll need to
warm the car up good and drive it to burn all the crap out. Also if
you have new rings etc on that side, there will be smoke as they
seat. If all was reinstalled correctly, rings staggered, good
cylinders used and valve guides are OK this smoke should stop in a
fairly short time say 50 miles or so of regular driving.

Re: smoke out the exhaust

Darby, I take it (by deduction) that a right side cylinder exits
the muffler on the left side? Which one? Could his problem be on the
right side? In all my years I never paid attention to this detail.
Thanks in advance Darby.

@@ Yancey, The two front cylinders ( #1 & #3 ) that exit thru the
heat exchangers just dump into the muffler can through a small
funnel shaped cone w/holes in them, the two rear cylinders ( #2 & #4
) exit into the muffler in equal legnth pipes that face the opposing
side. For example #2 cylinder pipe enters the muffler can and turns
left, running horizontal and ends in a cone similar to the
termination of #3 & #1. This is done for balance (equal legnth
pipes).
I suppose he could have a problem in the #2 cylinder however I have
noted that oil burning in a cylinder tends to dissipate into the
muffler can and come out pretty evenly thru both pipes wheras a big
oily mass in either a heat exchanger or inside the can tends to come
out the nearest hole due to the thicker smoke.
