Topic: new air-cooled engine

I have been waiting to replace my '74 beetle engine for many years,
but it keeps on running, although I don't drive it much now. I have
considered buying a factory engine from Brazil - the one with a cast
crankshaft, but I don't know if it is a good idea, compared to a
line-bore rebuild. Geng Berg told me many years ago not to line-bore
a magnesium case, but 'everybody does it'. Which is better? Where do
I buy a factory engine?  Thanks for the advice.

I have 3 factory engines, with up to 30,000 trouble-free, leak-free
miles. I'd always go with one for stock use over a rebuild. I got
mine from www.btlmex.com; but I think Miguel has stopped carrying
them due to the slow delivery and shipping hassles.
You can still get them (higher price) from aircooled.net; cip1.com;
The Real Source; Motorworks.com, oeveedub.com; etc.

>>>>>> FROM Sean;Hmmmm think maybe ya mis understood Gene ? Cause we
line bore cases all the time . But i do see a lott of line bore
jobb,s go bad . << This is usually due too badd case prepping.
Usually something holding case apart between the case splitt usually
due too some numb nutz prying case apart with screw driver,s? When i
send a case too the machinist i spend like 3 day,s preppin it, if
it,s for me ? Where as for you or clancy i spend like maybe 30
minute,s, on your cases ? lmao Case preperation is a must starting
with how ya splitt the case ? New cases are better ? And if any way
possible i like ta retain stock thrust ? But ifn thrust need,s
cutting i reccomend a single cutt on the case then turn double
thrust cut bearing down. When possible ? Keep,s lil more meat on the
case thrust journal. Ifn ya decide ta rebuild your motor stead of
buyin a new one? Gett some one in the know ta walk ya thru it
startin with tear down. Tear down is usually where the most damage
occur,s too the case. There,s a right way and a wrong way ta tearin
a buggy motor down ? Sean
