Here is the procedure from my 96 Jetta (your radio should be the same
or similar.
Turn on radio should be in the "safe" mode and on the display.
Press the mode and scan buttons and hold them down until "100" lights
up in the display. RELEASE THE BUTTONS Do not under any
circumstances continue holding them down or press them again, This
would cause the radio to consider "1000" to be the code.
Use the station buttons 1 to 4 to input the code numbers from your
radio card. (similar to setting a digital clock) Use button 1 to
input the first code number button 2 the second one and so on. For
technical reasons the first digit can only be a 1 or left blank.
The following digits in the code may be any number from 0 to 8
Once the code is shown on the display press the MODE and Scan buttons
simultaneously and hold them down until the word "SAFE" appears in
the display.
Release the buttons! Soon after a radio station frequency should
display and the radio is operational.
If you enter the wrong code the radio will go into lock up mode. The
word "SAFE" will appear blinking then continuous.
You can repeat the procedure "once"
If you input another incorrect code., it will lock up for
approximately one hour. Leave the radio on for that hour and then
assuming you have the right code try the procedure again.
Chris. I hope this helps. I have done this several times whenever I
have to disconnect the battery and it has always worked for me. The
procedure above is almost verbatim out of the radio manual for my 96
jetta. Good luck.
