Topic: Ho w do I change my own lightbulb?

Okay i read the funny joke about changing a lightbulb, but really
-how do I change my lightbulb.

I own a 2000 vw beetle and one of my headlights is out. I bought the
new one but I would rather put it in myself than pay someone. I
dont have the manuel ( Yeah I know, it should be with the car)
HELP

"Yeah I know, it should be with the car"

Actually no, shop manuals are never with the car, but you should buy
it as soon as possible. If you've gotten a quote on changing that
bulb at the dealer, you'll see that the price of the manual is much
less than you'll pay some hack to work on your car.

Don't know the procedure, since BOTH of my wife's lights went out
while the car was still under warranty. However, I'm sure it'll
happen again, so I'm getting the manual before it does. I do know
it's pretty involved, (I think the inner fender comes out) but it
can't be that bad.

Re: Ho w do I change my own lightbulb?

Hiya Red,

Unfortunately the news from this quarter is not good. We had a 99
Beetle. Left front bulb went south at just about the same time the
left rear bulb went out. To get both of them fixed at the
dealer's........$100. Yes, you read correctly. The headlight
assembly on the driver's side is a practical impossibility to
service (not really, but darned close to it)

Getting the shop manual (Haynes has one out now) may help, but be
aware of one sinister fact. VW is designing their cars so that
owner serviced parts are getting to be a thing of the past. VW
wants you to bring your car in for practically everything nowadays.

Re: Ho w do I change my own lightbulb?

I've got a 98 New Beetle and actually it is rather easy to change the
bulb. Dare I say a lot easier than it is to change the headlight in
my 64 beetle. There are also instructions in the owner's manual on
how to do this.
Ok, pop the hood. Now look down into the front corner of the engine
compartment to where the headlight is. You will see a black
assembly tucked up in the fender, Yes you can access the inner
fender from the engine compartment. The whole headlight assembly is
close to 8" long. There is a black metal strap around the assembly
with a metal clip on it. The clip flips back and opens up. Now
there is a black plastic lever sticking out of the assembly. Above
that plastic handle there is a little square that has like a diamond
pattern on it. Push that little square in to unlock the mechanism
and at the same time push the handle down. the handle should slide
down and as it slides you will see the headlight start to come out
of the fender. once it slides as far as it can go you can just pull
the headlight assembly out of the front of the fender. on the back
you unplug the wires and there is a plastic cap that comes off and
you can access the headlight bulbs. It takes an H-1 bulb. Put the
new bulb in and assembly is the reverse. I've changed the bulb on
both sides of my bug at least 3 times.
5 years and 106,000 miles along with the temp changes in upstate NY
and bulbs go.

The tailights are even easier... The only ones that I can't do and
would have to take back to the dealer is the fog lamps due to the
front apron having to come off of the car.

Good luck and have fun.

Luke

Re: Ho w do I change my own lightbulb?

first take a baseball bat or metal pole, whatever it is yu have layin
around and bust out all of the lights on the exterior of the car.
that way you can make an insurance claim and get all new bulbs for
the car. also if you dont like the paint that is on the car you can
scratch the words "die hippy scum" or " smake this fat one stupid
hippy" and draw a picture of the male sex organ. of course you only
want to do this if you have a low deductable. if you dont, just buy
the manual or just start unscrewing screws untill the light comes
out. good luck

believe you have to take it to a mechanic for a stupid headlight! Is
there any tricks that can help?

I don' think that it's a joke. I just broke my lever off. I was able
to change the bulb by loosing the housing a pulling the assembly
out. I got the assembly back in but I cannot fully latch the housing
without the lever. Does anyone know if you can purchase just the
slide lever?
