Actually, it's perfectly normal for an internal combustion engine to
"consume" oil even when it is in perfect mechanical condition. The
difference between consuming and burning oil is that with oil
burning you get this lovely blue-coloured smoke from your exhaust
(which I'll bet you aren't getting on your NB). One quart per 1K
miles is about the average. You shouldn't have to worry about
running out of oil prior to your next scheduled oil change since you
are supposed to check your oil level frequently and top off as
necessary. If you can't handle the chore of checking and topping
off your oil then I suggest you sell your car to somebody that will
actually take care of it. One last thing, please refrain from
typing in all caps... it is taken the same way as you screaming and
is considered quite rude.

Not to dtrast from the previous statement (caps are rude, by the way)
but 1 qt/1k miles is nuts. My Nissan has 140k miles on it and
consumes zero oil. Doesn't burn it, doesn't consume it. My newer
Chevy with 32k doesn't use or burn ANY oil either. Exactly on the
full mark every time we check it. To use that much oil there is
probably a flwn in engine design that VW finds too expensive for
them to fix. I gaurentee that if the engine blows they won't sayy a
wod about how the engine is "supposed" to consume oil. My Bug burns
a third of tha and it's way overdue for a rebuild.

Sorry for the confusion I've probably caused, I didn't mean that
engines should use that much, rather one quart per 1K miles seems to
be the normal "acceptable" oil usage in automotive engines. My
sister's old 86 toyota pickup would barely use a cup of oil per 3K
miles and it had 120K miles on the original rings/valves/etc. while
my friend's 98 S-10 uses a quart per 1K and it only has 16K on it.
An interesting aside, if you have the blue Bentley manual, check out
the engine technical data chart on pg 75 in the engine section. It
lists the oil consumption for a 1300 as 1 to 3.4 pints per 1K miles
and 1.7 to 3.4 per 1K for the 1500.

Re: NEW BEATLES ARE LEMONS

My experience.....new doesn't automatically equate to better! I know
a guy with a new VW van getting 8-9mpg and the dealer says it's
normal.

Experience is sometimes hard earned,

In evaluating the oil consumption there are only three or possibly
four or five reasons for the need to add more at such a high rate.

1. It leaked out.
2. It is getting past the piston rings and going out the tail pipe
via              blue smoke.
3.It burning it in the cylinder and not smoking. Hmmmmm.......
4. It vaporized. Don't ask.....
5. The neighbor boy is stealing it, draining it a quart at a time to
keep          his '66 Mustang going.

I agree that any car that sucks this much petroleum based product is
a loser and a lemon.

Your action should be:
1. Search for a recall or class action suit in the works.
2, Spend as much time as you can in the customer service line and
showroom                     of your dealership and LOUDLY vent your
displeasure of their product, warrenty and service department and be
sure to do it in front of potential customers and buyers. They WILL
deal with you.
4. Skip the service personnel and personally contact the Manufacturer
Zone Rep, business owner and every manager.

Don't give up

Re: NEW BEATLES ARE LEMONS

Although I don't have much experience with lemons, just because you
got a lemon Beetle (if it is one, like I said, I don't know for
sure) doesn't mean every New Beetle is a lemon. Sure, it happens,
and people lose money, time, patience, and get frustrated(weren't
there electrical problems-recall-some years back?). Just don't waste
time. Remember - laws in some states only give you 11 months to make
a claim, others??? I don't know, but hurry before it's too
late!(court etc...) Oh, and write stuff down if you haven't. Get
people to sign papers etc... that will scare them. ~:0

Ok, if everyone will calm down, there is a fiew sugestions that I
would like to make.

1: Was the engine broke in properly? If it was ran even remotly hard
when it was new, that could have messed up the engine pretty bad.

2: Are you over oiling it? If you are, then oil is getting forced
around the rings, and burning out.

3: Did you try leting it just go for a whyle without adding any oil?
To see if it keeps burning off.

4: Are you using the right oil? The best for that engine is 10-30.

5-30 is too thin, and 10-40 is too harsh.

5: Are you useing synthetic oil? Synthetic oil is really bad for a
new engine, because it prevents proper break in.

6: Have you used any engine oil additives? These to are hard on new
engines.

7: Have you checked the oil preasure relief valve? Cause if the
preasure is too high, ot burns oil.

If new Beetles are lemons, then how come so many new owners love
them?

Only proving that Germans have perfected both social and mechanical
engineering. Unfortunate that those bugs are made in the U.S. with
fuckheadz like us building 'em.

Jees, dude, have a marguita. some engines do, some don't. diesels
like to. I've lived it both ways. Smoke is the break-point--time
to get the wrenches out. Anyway, by using more oil and old engines,
the species will die out and that's not necessarily
bad--inappropriate ones like you will be eliminated--whoops, I'm
pure Jerry Springer, too!!!!!!!!

Re: NEW BEATLES ARE LEMONS

New Beetles might not be Lemons but they sure give a great impression
of being one. I would assume a Lemon is a rare occurance however,
these bugs including mine have ongoing and long-term chronic
problems. Engine oil being one of them. My engine now knocks and
the window regulators are all faulty. Not to mention the o2 and
other sensors that were replaced at great expense.(this is just a
small list) This car is garbage and VW doesn't give a damn because
there are so many of us unhappy suckers out there who fell for this
cute car. I am disappointed, pissed off and feel quite robbed for
forking out hard-earned money for this piece of crap. We seem to be
all screwed because at this point we are all off warranty so thanks
VW for abandoning all of your loyal customers. This is the 11th and
last VW anyone in my family will buy. I will work hard and do my
homework to buy a real car with a good service record and good
manufactuere/customer care.(all of which I don't get from VW) Good
luck with your cars. I would be more than happy to participate in
any class action that I would highly suggest someone start. these
cars are ridiculous and we have all been had. Stay away if you are
thinking of buying unless you wish to admire it in your driveway.

DYLAN,

HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE AMERICAN CONSUMER BY TRYING TO COVER UP AN
ENGINEERING PROBLEM BY TELLING US THAT IT IS NORMAL, AND THAT WE
SHOULD BE WILLING TO "TOP OFF" OUR OIL EVERY TIME WE FILL OUR TANKS.
HOW DARE YOU TELL US THAT WE ARE IRRESPONSIBLE CAR OWNERS IF WE ARE
NOT WILLING TO SINK MONEY, TIME, AND EFFORT, INTO A PROBLEM CREATED
BY YOUR COMPANY, (ALSO HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF THIS
ENGINEERING DEBACLE ON THE ENVIRONMENT). I WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS
NORMAL, LOSING CUSTOMERS DUE TO A POOR PRODUCT AND EVEN WORST
CUSTOMER SERVICE.
