Topic: '72 VW with auto trans.

I have a friend who has a 1972 VW "Bug" with an automatic
transmission. Is this a rare VW?

They are not really "rare", just produced in much fewer numbers
during the years 1968 through 1976. The car uses the VW standard
transmission with 2nd gear taken out and a torque converter
installed. The transmission has a Low, 1st/2nd and Neutral. You
have to really scrounge parts houses, shops and VW friends for help
locating some of the repair parts. Not nearly as fast acccelerating
as a 4 speed.
Just bought my third "autostick" beetle - a 1973 standard model.
Previously had a 1969 bought new and a 1974 bought one year old
used.

I am looking for the pump drive shaft for a 72 VW full automatic
transmission. It is that skinny long shaft that is pulled out of the
tranny after the engine is pulled. I broke that shaft in my Vw
trike.
Need another. Anyone got one? golson@air-internet.com
