Topic: values of old bugs

I have watched the classifieds wanted sections on several sites and
would like to vent my opinion. Some of us bug , fix+resell people
are trying to feed our families by restoring +selling these cars. I
think most folks that are placing wanted ads are forgetting that
these cars are at least 20 yrs. old, and some are 40 yrs. old! All
of the modern new cars are nearly $20,000. The new beetle is at
least $18,000. Most of you are looking to spend $1000 to $1500 ,
for a "classic" old bug in very good condition. Some of you say you
are willing to do a little work, but in reality , I find that
anything more than a cleaning + minor adjusting is what you mean. If
you live in a climate where bugs don't rust out at all, the cars
that need a lot of repairs will be fairly cheap. But most of us live
in the real world where bugs rusted out 15 or 20 years ago. In
these climates, a bug restorer might have to pay at least $1500 for
a rebuildable bug that came from a rust-free area. Then he will
spend anywhere between $1500 to $2000 in new parts to do all
mechanical, paint materials, rubber parts, chrome parts , interior
parts ,etc. Then he spends a month, more like 2, working full time.
How much do you clear in your paycheck in a 1 or 2 month period???
So , give us a break, please, we are not getting rich.

Re: values of old bugs

OK here’s the scoop - guys like me can make over $65 per hour doing
our regular job, but we hate it! So we spend the precious few hours
we have outside our jobs playing with our bugs. When I look at how
much I’ve spent (both money and time) I probably should have paid
some on to restore it, but now I know this bug top to bottom. Sorry.
When my (helpless) friends admire my bug I tell ‘em to buy a
restored one - I don’t want to have to help them!
