A resounding NO! Taken from the current issue of Hot VW's, they say
you can contact Beetlemex, Inc. of Nogales, Arizona. Apparently they
import the new bugs, and put the brand new bug bodies onto early
U.S. chassis. They call such a car a remanufactured bug. Their # is
011-526-210-7878.

Actually, I spoke to a gentleman at the Englishtown, NJ car show this
oct. and he stated that there was a company in Conn. that imports
the bug from MX. I do not know if this info. I received is factual
but he states that the US government allows only a few in a year and
the conn. company has exculusive rights. He states that they cost
about 15,000 dollars. I can't find anything subtantial to back this
info up though. Perhaps he was misinformed and this too was one of
those companies that "rebuild" old bugs.
If anyone has any info on this please ad to this.

I can understand the want of a brand new bug, but for fifteen grand
you can get a kickass resto from just about any year you want.

No...doesn't meet DOT safety standards needed to be licensed in
States. Go buy a new Beetle. More fun, better car. Les Alderman

Just to add a note re. CT dealer with Mex bugs...he does exist, saw
him at a fall county fair with 5 bugs on display. However, since he
received them (in August) he has not been able to sell a single one
due to DMV snags. Seems they can't quite figure out how to classify
them: restored is definately out; composite is out;kit car looks
like the best bet.

In the meantime, he has pulled all bugs (10) off his lot and put them
in storage until this boondoogle is resolved. At any rate, just
some thoughts: given the $15,500 base price (options: radio, chrome,
ac, etc add to the price)then for same amount buy a new beetle or
you could buy a *terrific* original bug and have at least 7k left
over. In addition, at the end of 10 years your original beetle has
probably appreciated in value.

Good luck, ellie
