Hi all,

I've updated the forum software, and apparently it has some improved tools for stopping spammers.  Here's hoping things improve.

Darren.

Sorry for the downtime, I missed the domain registration email.

Hi all,

The Volkswebbin site has been moved to a new location: http://www.volkswebbin.net

Your old bookmarks to the old site should still keep working, but it wouldn't hurt to update them to the new location.

Your same username and password should work on this site as before.

Let me know if you have any issues!

Darren.

Yup, it's back now.  Power supply in the server died while I was off on a conference sad

New site (with data migrated!) coming online soon.

Hmm - I noticed that several of Doug's posts here are blank: http://www.openroad.ca/volkswebbin/view … p?id=82430  Not sure if Doug changed anything with the images but it looks like there might be an error there.  Anyone else having a problem with them?

Altema - What browser & version are you using?  It could be that you have some old files cached that are causing a problem.  Depending on your browser, try deleting your cached files.

When are you going to get an ACVW?

Heh, someday!  I had a VW in high school and university, but job, wife, kids all got in the way.  But last summer, I finally got around to rebuilding the rotten garage in the back of our house, and I think a '66 beetle would fit in their real nice...

Hi all,

I just upgraded the forum software that powers Volkswebbin.  It was a bit of a bumpy upgrade, so let me know if you notice anything weird...

Cheers,

Darren.

Hi all,

In the constant battle betwen good (you guys) and evil (spammers) I'm trying a new technique.

I've disabled Akismet (the spam blocking software) because while it mostly worked, it often took out people posting links.  For some reason it also started taking a long time to post messages.

Now, I've changed the register page to require you to fill out a "Captcha" -- basically you have to type in some garbled text that is difficult for computers to read, but (supposedly) relatively easy for humans.  The bad news is it's a bit of a pain, but the good news is you only have to do it once, and once you've registered you don't need to worry about it.

You can read more about Recaptcha here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReCAPTCHA

The other good news is that posting new messages is a lot faster now.

We'll see how this works.  The downside is that if a spammer takes the time to register by hand, nothing is stopping them from posting crap, however, it seems that most of the spammers are just automated bots so hopefully this will help.

Have fun,

Darren.

Due to the level of spam on the site, I have implemented a tool called "Akismet" that tries to identify if your message is spam.  Spammers will have their message held in quarantine and will not be able to post any further.

Unfortunately, there is a fairly high level of "false positives", where the system flags a valid message as spam and locks regular users out of the site.

If this happens to you, simply send an email to the address indicated and I will un-ban your account.  I wish we didn't have to do this, but the levels of spam we're seeing are driving some long-timers away from the site and I don't want that to happen.

Thanks for your understanding,

Darren.

I installed some anti-spam software, hopefully this will help.  Unfortunately, it's difficult to come up with a good anti-spam solution without impacting valid users as well.

In order to cut down on the spam, you must now be a registered user before you can post to the site.

To register, click the "Register" link at the top of the page.

Thanks,

Darren.

OK, Was hoping not to have to do this, but it looks like the spammers win this round.  I'm now requiring registration for posting.

Hi all,

As you might have noticed, I've added ads to the top of the Volkswebbin forum.  Hopefully this doesn't turn you off -- my main goal here is to bring in a few dollars to help keep the site going.

I'll probably play around with the format, and might try moving the ad bar to the right hand column rather than the top.  Let me know what you think.

Darren.

Well, after a brief hiatus Volkswebbin is back.  All your old messages should still be here, and your old usernames and passwords should still work.

I've moved the forum over to new software, after a serious problem was identified with the software that powered the site previously.

This new forum software is much simpler, easier to maintain and hopefully will have less problems in the future.

It's currently running the default style, and I hope to update it to look a little more polished and less boxy.  I'll probably turn off a few of the useless features as I know everyone here likes simple :)

Merry Christmas everyone.

Darren.
