Better do some searching. I know the 40hp 1200cc used copper head to cylinder "gaskets" but I thought with the advent of the "D" case into the 1970's with dual relief and 8mm oil pump studs etc that they no longer used the crush gasket and sealed like a 1600. I've never taken a late 1200cc apart though.

I just put a windshield in a "car of a different color" and used black pinstripe tape to hide the yellow showing from the old seal.

Re: Rim question (5 replies, posted in Technical)
I had those wheels on my '74 Super Beetle almost 30 years ago. They had a slightly positive offset meaning they stuck out a little more than a stock wheel. With a 165/15 tire I had a little rub here & there @ stock height.

Re: smoke from defrost (26 replies, posted in Technical)
I've seen this occasionally. The exhaust gives a puff of smoke when started cold. The car isn't moving and therefore sitting in it's own puff of smoke. Some gets sucked into the fan where it ends up in your heater. I saw this in my '74 often and occasionall in the '71. Bet it doesn't happen on a windy day !

:-) sounds like my buddy. He & his son had 1970's chevys. The kid was up North coming home for Christmas and his starter failed at a rest stop. His Dad drove 150 miles, jacked up his running chevy and removed the starter, put it in the kids car & they drove both home.

Re: 12 volt conversion – Wiper Motor Update (8 replies, posted in Technical)
Any later model motor will work but the column switch years require some clever reworking to get working properly.
The best year I've found was '71 it is a late model motor but still used the two speed dash switch. The tech guys will tell you it will not fot without drilling the wiper shaft holes bigger. All you need to do is cut a new wiper shaft seal in half so you have the inner and outer half (two complete rings) trim them so they are flat and slip one down the shaft before installation of they assy (inner seal), install the assy then slip the outer seal on, washer and nut. You can even use the nice outer plastic nut cover. Use two late model right side wiper arms (they are clearly marked R & L on the face of the arm near the base) unless you want the left one to stand up at an angle like the later cars do. I paint the arms the proper silver and even take the rubber out of the blades to paint the blade holders silver too like they should be. If you use a 71 dash switch you may have to open the hole up and use the 71 nut (polish it 1st) but the original knob & button will work fine. A '67 dash switch or original single speed switch works too. The only think left would be to make a small modification to the upper motor mount under the cowl where there is a small tab and 8mm bolt.

You know Hank, now we recommended that to Clancy I remember he has a 65 not a '64. Do we tell him now that he could have bolted a complete late model 2 speed assy?
Clancy if that setup doesn't work out in the long run I have another trick for you using 71 era parts that doesn't require drilling out your two wiper shaft holes.
I've got my '62's spare wiper assy apart now working on the conversion with the Volvo motor. I'm just waiting for two new shafts, I thought while it was apart I'd just rebuild the whole works.

You beat me too it Yancy. Compression test is useless unless the valves have been properly adjusted.

I just bought one too and have my spare SWF and the new Volvo unit side by side. Yup it looks liek the same thing, I have to move the stud and change the big shaft.
You can clearly see the Volvo unit is simply a grown up version of the old Vw unit though.

Re: Hood issues (7 replies, posted in Technical)
Mexi seals do not fit across the top of the hood. Only the entire sides & front where they meet an original looking curved seal at the corner and the original seal across the top. VW's adjustment for an XS gap across the top was to bent the cowl up slightly using a "local manufacture" tool which at the dealer basically meant whatever you could get your hands on. I find that in leiu of bending the cowl, sometimes if the gap isnt too bad a 1/2" wide roll of closed cell foam like your front door uses works if stuck under the lip of the lid.

It's funny, in my 30+ years of VWs I've tried it all, huge displacement, big carbs headers, turbos, heavy duty clutches, big wheels, custom paint jobs and now I find myself all exited looking at a 40hp sitting in my garage for my back & forth to work car ! Does this mean I got old ?

Re: Burning rubber (6 replies, posted in Technical)
Funny ! In the 15 years I drove my 74 with the bilge pump fans I had to replace the foot well vents up front 4 - 5 times as they would distort from the heat and not close properly. I would routenely melt the plastic trim "donuts" in the rear footwells and finally left them off.

Re: Frame Head Replacement (5 replies, posted in Technical)
I normally find the frame head is rusted out rear of the lower control arm mounts to across the rear lowering.
Remove the gas tank and blow out / cap the fuel lines !
I have good luck cutting the bottom piece off a few inches past the rust and grafting on just the rear portion. Obviously if the rust is more severe you'll need to do more work. I've had then that the bottom of the center tunnel 1/2 way back to the shifter is gone.

Looks like it should to me. Worse case trade the armature with the original.
I printed the picture of the two volvo's I found on Ebay and a couple VW units there as well and it looks identical. You may need to mess with the shaft a little but as I said I bet this is a straight across trade in part or parcel.
